Babar Azam's Pakistan stooped to a new low after ICC T20 World Cup 2024 co-hosts USA defeated them in the most dramatic of fashions.

The match, which took place at the Grand Prairie stadium in Texas, saw the United States of America pick up a sensational victory in a thrilling Super Over. Babar Azam's Pakistani team had no clue whatsoever as to what was happening throughout the match. The USA, despite being counted as one of the minnows, outclassed the one-time T20 World Champions to cause the first major upset.

In the previous T20 World Cup edition in 2022, Babar Azam and co. had lost similarly against Sikander Raza's Zimbabwe team by just 1-run at Perth. Yesterday in Dallas (Texas), the Men in Green handed another historic victory to a USA team, which is playing it's first-ever T20 World Cup edition in this 20-team tournament.

Babar Azam slams his team for their all-round poor performance

After such a humiliating loss from a winning position, Pakistan captain Babar Azam's facial expression explained it all. Haris Rauf's 20th over's final delivery saw USA's Nitish Kumar score a boundary and tie the scores in Texas. Immediately after it, Babar was seen directing a few words to Rauf as the former slammed his fast bowler for not doing enough to defend the score.

Then in the Super Over bowled by Mohammad Amir, things went from bad to worse for Pakistan. Amir conceded 18 runs in those crucial 6 deliveries right after finishing the regulation game as the team's best bowler. The left-arm seamer had the best economy rate in the 2nd innings, conceding just 25 runs at an economy rate of 6.25.

But when it mattered the most, Amir made sure his side was not even getting close to beating the USA even in the Super Over. The Green Army would score just 13 runs in response to Pakistan's total and lost their opening ICC T20 World Cup 2024 game by 5 runs.

Following the match, when Babar Azam appeared in the press room, he lashed out at his players for lacking intensity and zeal across all departments. He admitted that he was upset after the loss and claimed that Pakistan had failed to make the most out of the first 6 powerplay overs.

They lost too many wickets and gave away momentum easily to the USA, something Babar Azam feels should improve in the upcoming games.

"To be honest, whenever you lose a game, you are always upset. We did not play good in all three departments. After the 10th over we got momentum, but again we lost too many wickets and then your momentum is gone. So yeah... I think as a batting unit we need to step it up in the middle and in the end." - Babar told press reporters.

How will Pakistan operate against India?

The only question that comes across after Pakistan's shocking loss - is whether will they be able to beat India on June 9th. With the Indian team riding high on form and momentum, it won't be a shock if they blow away Babar Azam's side at the Nassau County Stadium in New York.
