Shubman Gill struggled to score runs in the recent IND vs PAK clash in Asia Cup 2023. The right-handed batsman piled up 10 runs off 32 balls in the match. He lost his wicket to Haris Rauf and struggled to score runs against Shaheen Afridi too.
Shubman Gill Has Performed Against Bowlers Faster Than Shaheen Afridi: Salman Butt
While speaking on his YouTube channel, former Pakistan batsman Salman Butt defended Shubman Gill after his poor show against Pakistan. He said that Gill has performed against bowlers faster than Shaheen Afridi. Butt also recalled names of pacers against whom Gill scored a lot of runs in the past.
“He has faced [Anrich] Nortje who has similar pace. He has faced [Kagiso] Rabada and others too. It’s not just pace, it’s also because of the line and length and swing, along with that pace. Shaheen’s skill-set is the factor.
This is the same Shubman Gill who pulled Nortje on the front-foot, who took on the likes of Lockie Ferguson when he scored that double century in ODIs. He has performed against bowlers faster than Shaheen,” the 38-year-old said.
Shaheen Afridi Has Troubled Many Batters: Salman Butt
Salman Butt also explained why it is tough for batters to play Shaheen Afridi. He noted that Afridi swings the ball late due to which batters have trouble facing him.
“Shaheen’s big factor is the late swing with new ball. It troubles most batters. Shubman is new, but Rohit is one of the most experienced players, and he also faced trouble. Kohli also got out. Shaheen has troubled David Warner as well,” the former right-handed batsman further said.
Recently, Shubman Gill reached the 3rd spot in ICC ODI rankings for batsmen. Earlier, he struggled to score runs in ICC World Test Championship final against Australia in June.
The 24-year-old also struggled to score runs in the IND vs WI T20I series, where he got out for single digits in four out of five matches. However, Gill has arrived with big knocks in many games. He is the leading run-getter for India this year.
