While only time will tell whether Shubman Gill plays against Pakistan or not the signs are very promising so far. The highly-anticipated match between the arch-rivals is scheduled to be played on Saturday (October 14) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Shubman Gill has already missed India’s first two World Cup games due to dengue. He was diagnosed with dengue just before the World Cup opener against Australia in Chennai. The right-handed batsman was expected to play against Afghanistan but was ruled out of the game after he had to be hospitalized as his platelets count fell.

As a result, Shubman Gill could not even travel to Delhi with the rest of the team for the game against Afghanistan. Before the game against Afghanistan on Wednesday (October 11), India’s batting coach Vikram Rathour delivered a positive update on the opener, saying that he was hospitalized only as a precautionary measure.

“He is recovering well. He was hospitalized, yes, but that was more as a precaution. He is back in the hotel; he is recovering well. So, being monitored by the medical team and whatever update we get, we are hoping that he will recover pretty soon. He is looking good actually,” Vikram Rathour said.

Shubman Gill lands in Ahmedabad:

Shubman Gill’s participation in the high-voltage India vs Pakistan clash looked as good as over after he was hospitalized. He could not even travel to Delhi with the rest of the team. However, things have started looking promising ahead of the game. On Tuesday (October 10), he was discharged from the hospital.

And on Wednesday when Team India was in Delhi, he landed in Ahmedabad from Chennai. He was seen wearing a mask as he made his way out of the Ahmedabad airport.

With just two days left before the game against Pakistan, it would not be very surprising if the star batsman is not picked in the playing eleven. In his absence, Ishan Kishan opened the innings against Australia and Afghanistan and could retain his spot in the team for the India vs Pakistan clash too.

India will be hoping that Shubman Gill quickly recovers. The young opener has been in stunning form in ODIs this year. He is the leading run-getter in ODIs in 2023 with 1230 runs at an average of 72.35 and a strike rate of 105.03.
