Shardul Thakur was crowned as the best fielder by the India team management for the game against Afghanistan. Virat Kohli presented him with the award after the team won the game by 8 wickets at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi to register their second win of the ICC World Cup 2023.
Indian team started the tradition of presenting gold medals to the player who gave the best fielding effort in the match. After the game against Australia, Virat Kohli received it and now it was the turn of Shardul Thakur as he took a staggering catch against Afghanistan.
Shardul Thakur, who was included in the team for the Afghanistan clash, pulled a brilliant catch near the boundary ropes to send Rahmanullah Gurbaz packing. He took the catch on the first attempt but he realised that he was going past the boundary line.
He immediately flicked the ball away as he passed the boundary rope. He came back in time to take it on the second attempt and send the Afghanistan batters packing. His effort saw him getting the gold medal from Virat Kohli.
As Shardul Thakur was presented with the gold medal, he gave a hilarious reaction. He first acknowledged the award and then acted as if tears were rolling down his eyes after receiving the medal and then hugged his teammate Virat Kohli.

IND vs PAK: “That catch was at a crucial period,” Says Shardul Thakur
Shardul Thakur also talked about the catch of Rahmanullah Gurbaz and admitted that it came to a crucial stage. He also talked about the dressing room atmosphere and elaborated:
“That catch was at a crucial period because Hardik took a chance bowling a bouncer and we got a wicket at that stage. I have been part of this team for quite a few years now. I know the boys very well. We have created an atmosphere in the dressing room where there is no such thing as juniors and seniors. Everyone has gelled in so well that you don’t feel nervous.”
Shardul Thakur took one wicket with the ball in the 6 overs he bowled. India won the game by 8 wickets and will be next seen in action when they take on Australia on 14th October in Ahmedabad.
