South African captain Temba Bavuma didn’t come out to bat during Day 3 of the first IND vs SA Test after he suffered a hamstring injury during the second session on Day 1. Bavuma suffered a left hamstring injury due to which he had to leave the field and was taken for scans.

Now as per the recent medical update by Cricket South Africa on Temba Bavuma‘s fitness, there was a lot of risk if the South African captain would have gone out to bat on Day 3. His injury would have increased and would have become more serious.

However, the medical team is constantly monitoring his situation and is trying to give him the best chance to bat in the fourth innings if needed.

Notably, Temba Bavuma faced a lot of criticism after he didn’t come to bat in South Africa’s first innings. The fans bashed him for not giving it all to help his teammate Marco Jansen hit his maiden Test century. The young all-rounder was left stranded at 84* off 147 balls when the Proteas lost their 9th wicket. Had Bavuma come to bat, Jansen might have got the opportunity to complete his century.

CSA provides medical update on Temba Bavuma

Update on Bavuma from CSA: “Following continuous medical assessments, it was determined there was too much of a risk of aggravating his injury had he gone out to bat at this stage of the game. The medical team are managing him to give him the best chance to bat should he be required in the 4th innings.”

This is not the first time that Temba Bavuma has suffered a hamstring injury. Bavuma faced a niggle ahead of South Africa vs Australia 2023 ODI World Cup semi-final and played the match carrying his injury.

Temba Bavuma didn’t find a place in the three-match ODI squad against India following his dismal performance in the 2023 ODI World Cup and the team was led by Aiden Markram. South Africa had lost the series by 2-1 against KL Rahul-led India.

Getting back to the match, the Indian team finished at 62/3 at Tea in their second innings on Day 3. The South African pacers removed Indian openers Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal for 0 and 5 runs respectively whereas Shubman Gill also perished after scoring 26 runs.

Now all the onus remains on Virat Kohli, as he will be looking to help India cross South Africa’s lead and later set up a good competitive target to give themselves a chance to win the match.

India has yet to win a Test series in South Africa for the past 31 years and has won just two Tests from the last six Tests played here. Also, the Indian team had the best chance of ending their drought in 2021 but they lost the rest two games after winning the first match dominantly in Centurion.

The Indian team won the ODI series against the Proteas by 2-1 whereas the T20I series ended at a scoreline of 1-1.
