The Indian cricket team missed the services of pacer Mohammed Shami in the first Test of the series against South Africa as he took several injections during the 2023 ODI World Cup and is undergoing a chronic heel issue. This was revealed by Shami’s former Bengal teammate in a recent interaction with PTI.
Mohammed Shami had a blast in the 2023 ODI World Cup and picked up 24 wickets from 11 matches. He picked up three five-wicket hauls out of which the most memorable was against New Zealand where he ended the game with a seven-fer.
Mohammed Shami was rested for the white ball tour against South Africa and was supposed to join the team in the red ball series. However, he was not fit enough to play the series and was later ruled out.
Revealing about Mohammed Shami’s heel issue, his former Bengal teammate while speaking to PTI stated that Shami took several injections during the CWC 2023 due to pain in his heel. His teammate further added that as a player gets older the recovery time for the injury increases.
Mohammed Shami’s teammate reveals about his injury
He said in an interaction with PTI, “Shami has a chronic left heel issue. A lot of people don’t know that he took injections regularly during World Cup and played the entire tournament through pain. But you must understand that as you grow older, recovery from each niggle or big injury takes that more time.”
Mohammed Shami has been India’s ace bowler in the ODI and the Test format and has taken wickets whenever the team has needed them. Shami’s bowling has become lethal day by day and the opposition batsmen have struggled to play him.
Mohammed Shami was not part of the Indian team for the first four games as they had the right team balance set due to Hardik Pandya. However, after Pandya got injured during the match against Bangladesh, Shami picked up a fifer in his first match against New Zealand and also ripped through the Sri Lankan batting lineup in the same tournament.
The Indian team put up a score of 397 runs against New Zealand in the first semi-final of the 2023 ODI World Cup and the Kiwis at one point were chasing down the target pretty well.
The Indian team was in desperate need of a wicket and it was Mohammed Shami who bagged back-tio-back wickets and hence wrote the script of India’s victory.
Getting back to the IND vs SA first Test match, Team India brought in Prasidh Krishna in place of Mohammed Shami but he was able to leave no impact and leaked a lot of runs.
At the end, India ended up losing the match by an innings and 32 runs and their dream of winning a Test series in South Africa remained a dream once again.
The second Test match of the series will be played at the Sahara Park Newlands in Cape Town and the Indian team will want to end the tour with a win.
