Veteran opening batter Rohit Sharma is expected to join the Indian national cricket team in the next edition of the T20 World Cup in 2024. According to the latest news reports, Rohit Sharma will lead the Indian cricket team in the upcoming marquee tournament.
Rohit Sharma has been absent from T20Is since India’s 10-wicket loss to England in the 2022 T20 World Cup semi-finals. In his absence, Hardik Pandya has taken on the leadership role multiple times in T20Is. Some reports suggest that Rohit might retire from the format.
Rohit showed an impressive batting display in the World Cup 2023, providing flying starts for India. He was the second-leading run-getter, scoring 597 at an average of 54.27 and a strike rate of 125.95. However, his performances went in vain as India failed to win the title.
Rohit Sharma Set To Lead Team India In T20 World Cup
According to Dainik Jagran’s report, a BCCI official categorically stated that Hardik Pandya would not lead India in the T20 World Cup next year. Rohit Sharma has not been removed from the captaincy, and he is set to lead Team India across all three formats of the game.
The report further added that the official dismissed any potential impact on the BCCI’s decision arising from Rohit’s removal from the captaincy for the Mumbai Indians. The official said that Rohit would lead the team even if Hardik Pandya is fit and available for selection.
Rohit Sharma will continue leading the Indian team, despite Hardik Pandya replacing him in the five-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians. The uncertainty surrounding Rohit’s captaincy seems to have settled, indicating a likely continuation of his leadership role for India.
The 2024 T20 World Cup is scheduled to be played in the West Indies and the United States from June 4 to 30. India has failed to secure the ICC title in T20 cricket since their glory in the inaugural edition. India has lost two semi-finals and one final in the last four editions.
Rohit Sharma Will Continue As Captain – Sourav Ganguly
Speaking to ANI, Sourav Ganguly backed Rohit Sharma to continue leading the team in next year’s World Cup, highlighting his leadership qualities and success in the recent ICC ODI tournament.
“But as I said, once Rohit is back playing all formats, he should be the captain of India because he has done so well in the World Cup. And he is a leader, so I expect and presume that he will continue as captain till the T20 World Cup,” he added.
The Men in Blue entered as strong title contenders and registered 10 consecutive wins in the tournament. However, the hosts fell short in the final encounter, as Australia emerged victorious. Australia won by six wickets, securing their sixth ODI World Cup trophy.
