South African opener Dean Elgar played the last match of his international career during the second Test between India and South Africa. Dean Elgar scored a total of 16 runs in the Cape Town Test and ended his Test career with 14 Test hundreds.

Elgar was also given a guard of honor during Day 2 of the Cape Town Test and was lauded by his fellow South African cricketers.

Dean Elgar was the Player of the Match in the first Test match against India played in Centurion as he played a knock of 185 runs. This was Elgar’s 14th Test hundred and he became the anchor of South Africa’s brilliant batting display in the first innings.

Dean Elgar scored 4 and 12 runs in both innings of his final Test match and scored a total of 5347 runs in 86 Test matches with 23 half-centuries. His average throughout his Test career was 37.92. Elgar has also played eight ODI matches for South Africa. Elgar’s highest score in his Test career was 199 and he also led South Africa in Test cricket.

Apart from his brilliant Test career, Dean Elgar received a signed jersey by Indian batsman Virat Kohli and Indian captain Rohit Sharma also gifted him a jersey which was signed by all the players of the Indian cricket team. After Elgar got out in the second innings, he was congratulated by the players of the Indian team and the whole South African dressing room stood up and lauded him for his wonderful Test career.

Getting back to the match, the Indian cricket team won the Cape Town Test by seven wickets and also achieved their first win at the Sahara Park Newlands. India have been playing at the ground since 1993 and before the second Test, they had played a total of 6 matches.

The Indian team were not able to win a single match in the last 31 years at this ground. India lost four games at Newlands whereas two matches ended in a draw. However, the wait ended in 2024 and it was the Indian pacers who wrote the script to break South Africa’s fortress.

Indian pacers Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah took 12 of South Africa’s 20 wickets in both innings and broke the backbone of Proteas’ batting lineup. Siraj took a six-fer in the first innings whereas he was followed by Jasprit Bumrah in the second innings.

India also leveled the Test series 1-1 and also ended the South African tour with a win. Rohit Sharma also became the second Indian captain to level a Test series in South Africa after MS Dhoni.

The Indian team also covered the huge loss they suffered in the World Test Championship 2023-25 standings and have reclaimed their first spot. The Indian team slumped to the sixth spot after losing the first Test but now they will aim to qualify for the WTC final once again.

The Indian team are now scheduled to play against Afghanistan in the three-match T20I series and it will start from January 11, 2024.
