Former India cricketer Yuvraj Singh has made a shocking revelation, stating that he was never close to MS Dhoni and their friendship was limited to the context of cricket. Yuvraj Singh acknowledged that his lifestyle is quite different from that of Dhoni.
Yuvraj Singh’s standout performance earned him Player of the Tournament for India’s 2011 ODI World Cup win under Dhoni’s captaincy. He also played a crucial role as a key member of the Dhoni-led team that secured the inaugural T20 World Cup in South Africa in 2007.
We Were Friends Because Of Cricket – Yuvraj Singh
Speaking on ‘The Ranveer Show’ (TRS) podcast, Yuvraj Singh opened up about his friendship with MS Dhoni, stating that their different lifestyles contributed to their distant friendship. Singh highlighted that their bond was primarily linked to the sport.
“Should I be politically correct or honest? Let me be politically correct, because if you ask Mahi, he will be politically correct. Me and Mahi are not close friends; we were friends because of cricket; we played together. My lifestyle was very different from his, so we were never close friends, just because of cricket,” Yuvraj Singh said.
MS Dhoni Was Four Years Junior To Me – Yuvraj Singh
The former Indian all-rounder mentioned that he and Dhoni always gave their all for the country when they played together. He recalled that there were occasional differences in decision-making between them, which is common in any team.
“When me and Mahi went on the ground, we gave more than 100 per cent for our country, and he was captain and I was the vice-captain. When he came into the team, he was four years junior to me,” Yuvraj recalled.
“In between the captain and the vice-captain, there would be differences in decisions. Sometimes he made decisions that I did not like, sometimes I made decisions that he did not like, and that is true for every team,” he further added.
Don’t Have To Be Best Friends To Perform For The Team – Yuvraj Singh
The 41-year-old stated that Dhoni candidly informed him that the selection committee wasn’t considering him in the latter stages of his career. Singh stated that they both prioritized team performance over personal differences and ego.
“At the end of my career, when I was not getting a clear picture, I went to him and asked for advice. He told me at the time that the selection committee are not looking at you right now. And I was thankful to him that at least someone has spoken the truth to me.”
“You don’t have to be best friends to perform for the team. When you are in the field, you have to put your ego behind and play the game,” Yuvraj concluded.
