Former India National Cricket Team head coach Ravi Shastri has showered praise on the star opener Shubman Gill for showing maturity during the run-chase against Bangladesh in the final Super Four match of Asia Cup 2023.

Gill was the top performer for India in the batting department against Bangladesh on Friday, September 15 at the R. Premadasa Stadium, Colombo. He played a fantastic 121-run knock off 133 balls and his innings consisted of 8 boundaries and 5 maximums.

However, he still ended up on the losing side as the other batters weren’t up to the mark. India were bowled out for 259 and faced a 6-run loss heading into the summit clash of the Asia Cup 2023.

Ravi Shastri talked about Gill’s performance while reviewing the game on Star Sports. He said that the 24-year-old has batted extremely well in 2023 and he once again played a mature innings against Bangladesh that was paced perfectly. Ravi Shastri elaborated:

“Gill has batted extremely well this year. He has the ability to hit sixes and thus doesn’t need to take too much pressure. He knows he can target the bowlers like he did today between the 36th and 40th overs.

“He knew an extra fielder was there within the circle. He took chances against the fast bowlers and the spinners as he would have had to play differently once the field spread out after the 40th over. So the maturity he showed in the chase is extremely good from India’s point of view.”

When asked about Gill going for singles and doubles while also hitting boundaries, Shastri said that rotating the strike becomes very crucial as one can’t always go for big shots. He explained:

“That is the most important because such a spin attack will not allow you to hit a four or a six off every delivery. You have to run singles and doubles, so that you relieve the pressure, and if you get an opportunity in between, target the right bowler as Shubman targeted the off-spinner today.”

The former India head coach added that the innings played by Gill was extremely good because it helped India get closer to the target.

“He showed his temperament, shot selection, when to shift gears, which bowler to target, and which shots to play if he has to go for big shots. It was a very good innings because we wouldn’t have come so close without his knock,” he said.

Gill will be looking to once again play a big knock when India lock horns with Sri Lanka in the summit clash of the Asia Cup 2023 on Sunday.
