IND vs SL: "We Did Everything We Could've Achieved As A Team" - Rohit Sharma After Asia Cup 2023 Win

Indian captain Rohit Sharma opened up about the team’s Asia Cup 2023 win. He admitted that they did everything that they could’ve achieved as a team and said that they would cherish the tournament win for a long time. 

India thumped Sri Lanka by 10 wickets in the final of the Asia Cup 2023 to lift the title for the record 8th time. They played like a champion throughout the whole tournament and ticked almost every box right going into the ICC World Cup 2023. 

India kickstarted the tournament with a washout against Pakistan. However, after that, they thumped Nepal by 10 wickets to qualify for the Super Four stage. They then thrashed Pakistan by 228 runs and followed it up with a 41-run win over Sri Lanka that booked their berth in the final. 

In the dead rubber against Bangladesh, India tested their bench strength. It didn’t pay off as they lost the match by 6 runs. However, in the final, it was a performance for ages as their bowlers stepped up and led them to the win that will be etched in the hearts of many fans. 

India bundled out Sri Lanka for just 50 runs. The chief architect behind that was Mohammed Siraj as he picked 6 wickets in a flash. Hardik Pandya chipped in with three scalps whereas Jasprit Bumrah picked one. The team then chased the target inside 7 overs with 10 wickets and lifted the tournament. 

Rohit Sharma lauded his team for showing great character and credited his fast bowlers for their skillset. Speaking at the post-match presentation, he explained: 

“Yeah was a great performance. To come out and play like that in the final shows the mental character. Great start with the ball and clinical finish with the bat. I was standing in the slips, and something we take pride in – our seamers have been working really hard. 

“Very very clear in their mind. It was good to see that. Such a performance we will cherish for a long time. I never thought it’s going to do that much. Comes down to the skillset of individuals.”

Rohit Sharma credited Mohammed Siraj for his staggering performance and pointed out how the whole team stepped up at various stages. He explained: 

“Siraj has to be given a lot of credit. Rare for seamers to move the ball in the air and off the pitch. He’s coming off age. We did everything we could’ve achieved as a team in this tournament. Look forward to the series that is coming up in India, and then the World Cup. 

“The way Hardik and Ishan batted in that pressure situation against Pakistan, and then KL and Virat getting hundreds. The way Gill has been batting. Guys have stood up at various stages.” 

Rohit Sharma now will be seen in action when India take on Australia in the three-match ODI series. The first game will be played on 22nd September.
