IND vs WI: Here's Why Suryakumar Yadav Was Forced To Wear Sanju Samson's Jersey During First ODI

Suryakumar Yadav surprised one and all with the jersey he wore during the first ODI between India and West Indies in Barbados on Thursday (July 27).

The first match of the three-ODI series went India’s way as the Men in Blue thrashed the hosts by five wickets in yet another one-sided affair between the two teams. India did lose five wickets while chasing a modest total but they remained on the front foot throughout the game.

Rohit Sharma won the toss and decided to bowl first. His bowlers totally justified the decision by bowling out West Indies for a paltry total of 114 runs in 23 overs. Chinaman spinner Kuldeep Yadav was the pick of the bowlers, taking 4 for just 6 runs off 3 overs while senior allrounder Ravindra Jadeja picked up 3 wickets for 37 runs.

In reply, India chased down the total in 22.5 overs with opener Ishan Kishan’s 52 being the highest score by an Indian batter. India lost 5 wickets for 97 runs before captain Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja shared an unbeaten 21-run stand to take the team home.

Suryakumar Yadav wore Sanju Samson’s jersey:

As Team India players stepped out on the field after Rohit Sharma decided to bowl first, Suryakumar Yadav caught everyone’s attention with his jersey. The star batsman was wearing the jersey of Sanju Samson after the latter failed to find a spot in the playing eleven.

And according to the Indian Express, the reason behind it was the jersey’s size issue. The report stated that the batsman had informed the team management about the issue on the eve of the first match. Suryakumar Yadav had managed to do a photoshoot with the jersey before requesting a change in the jersey size.

The match day jersey given to Suryakumar Yadav turned out to be of ‘medium’ size instead of ‘large’. It was the reason why Suryakumar Yadav asked Samson for his jersey to play the first ODI. With the rules barring the players from hiding their names on their jerseys, Suryakumar Yadav had no option but to flaunt Samson’s name on the jersey.

“There was some size issue with his jersey. We were told about it two days before the game. He will be receiving his new jersey after the second ODI as the BCCI has shipped it with Indian team players selected for the T20 series. Till then he will be wearing his team mate jersey while playing,” a BCCI source told the news outlet.
