Indian vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane grabbed a stunning catch on Day 3 of the second Test against the West Indies at the Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain on Saturday, July 22. Ajinkya Rahane took a one-handed catch at slip to dismiss West Indies batter Jermaine Blackwood.

Ajinkya Rahane has failed to make an impact with the bat in his two innings in the series so far. However, the 35-year-old has been exceptional on the field. His stunning catch during the final Test was even more significant as the Indian bowlers struggled to take wickets on a flat track.

The incident took place in the 87th over of the West Indies’ innings. Ravindra Jadeja induced the outside edge of Jermaine Blackwood’s bat. Ajinkya Rahane showed great reflexes and made a diving catch to dismiss Blackwood, despite the ball deflecting off Ishan Kishan’s gloves.

The Windies vice-captain showed patience against quality Indian bowling, scoring 20 runs off 92 deliveries. It was Rahane’s 102nd catch in the longer format of the game. Current Team India head coach Rahul Dravid holds the record with 209 catches as a fielder in Test matches.

The hosts started the third day’s play with a score of 86/1. Kirk McKenzie was dismissed for 32 runs off 57 balls, including four boundaries. Skipper Kraigg Brathwaite led the side with a fighting knock and scored 75 runs before being dismissed by Ravichandran Ashwin’s sensational delivery.

Brathwaite seemed comfortable against the Indian bowling attack and was on his way to score his first century against India in red ball cricket. However, he was castled by Ravichandran Ashwin’s delivery. The veteran spinner bowled outside off stump and turned sharply to rattle the stumps.

The West Indies team ended the third day’s play at 229/5 with Alick Athanaze (37) and Jason Holder (11) at the crease. Ravindra Jadeja picked up two wickets, and Mukesh Kumar, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Mohammed Siraj took one wicket each.
