The first T20I between India and West Indies on Thursday (August 3) ended on a bizarre note thanks to Yuzvendra Chahal. The leg-spinner came out to bat in the very last over when India were all but out of the contest.
West Indies went on to win the game by four runs to take the lead in the five-match series. Batting first, West Indies scored 149 for 6 in the allotted 20 overs. Captain Rovman Powell top-scored for the hosts, scoring 48 off 32 balls with the help of three fours and as many sixes. Nicholas Pooran also played a good knock of 41 runs.
In reply, India finished their innings on 145 for 9. On a pitch where stroke-making was not easy, the Men in Blue kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Debutant Tilak Varma top-scored for India, scoring 39 off 22 balls with the help of two fours and three sixes. For West Indies, Obed McCoy, Jason Holder, and Romario Shepherd picked up two wickets apiece.
Watch: Yuzvendra Chahal messes up team plan:
While Yuzvendra Chahal is one of the best white-ball spinners in the world, one can say that he is not known much for his batting skills. And it became evident once again when he walked out to bat in the final over of the first T20I against West Indies, messing up the team plan.
The team management wanted debutant Mukesh Kumar to go ahead of him but Yuzvendra Chahal stepped out on the field before the pacer. It led to an embarrassing situation for Yuzvendra Chahal as well as the team. Soon after Yuzvendra Chahal joined Arshdeep Singh in the middle, he was seen running out of the field after realizing that Hardik Pandya and Rahul Dravid wanted Mukesh Kumar to bat ahead of him.
The leg-spinner did try to undo the damage but it was already late. According to the laws of the game, once a batsman steps onto the field at the fall of a wicket, he can’t go back and send another. Yuzvendra Chahal had no option but to return to the field.
