Why is Dhruv Jurel the captain of the team?
"For the multi-day two matches in Sri Lanka, Dhruv Jurel will be the Captain and the Wicket Keeper of the India A team. Devdutt Padikkal will be the Vice Captain. N Jagadeesan will be the second wicket-keeper," Devajit Saikia, Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, said in the press conference.
Dhruv Jurel, who is mostly known as a wicketkeeper-batter, has prior captaincy experience in his resume. Jurel led the national cricket team to the Under-19 Asia Cup Title in Sri Lanka (2019) and served as the vice-captain in the 2020 ICC Under-19 World Cup in South Africa.
In domestic cricket, he was the captain of the Central Zone cricket team for the 2025–26 Duleep Trophy season.
So far, Jurel has played 9 Tests for India and scored 459 runs for an average of 35.31 with one century and one half-century.
There are some other senior players as well in the team
Some of the fans across social media platforms expressed astonishment at seeing Jurel as the skipper of the A team. The appointment makes sense as he has experience in the role, and as he played for the main team in the past, he knows how to perform under pressure. However, there are some other names in the team who could also be named as the leader.
Ruturaj Gaikwad, the captain of the Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League, has an ample amount of experience as a captain, though his stats as a skipper are not very favorable. Devdutt Padikkal is another candidate in the team who has plenty of experience in domestic cricket.
