Here we are taking a look at the India cricket team vice-captain. While the vice-captain usually does not get the credit or the recognition like a captain, he plays a very important leadership role in the team. The vice-captain often acts as the bridge between the captain and the rest of the players in the team.
When the captain leads the team on the field, the vice-captain plays a key supporting role. Not only that, the vice-captain also leads the team in the captain's absence. It is quite clear now that the vice-captain plays a huge role in a team.

India Cricket Team Vice-Captain in ODIs and T20Is:
Before being named India's Test captain in May 2025, Shubman Gill was appointed as the vice-captain of the ODI and the T20I team in July 2024. Immediately after Gautam Gambhir was named the head coach of the team, Gill was given the vice-captaincy role in both the white-ball formats.
The move made it clear that the team-management saw him as a future leader and he was finally named as the Test captain as well. Gill made his debut for Team India in 2020 and did not take long to become a regular in all three formats. It would not be surprising if he goes on to become the captain in the white-ball formats as well.
India Cricket Team Vice-Captain in Tests:
Rishabh Pant has been named as the India cricket team's vice-captain in Tests. The wicketkeeper-batsman was assigned the role before the India tour of England 2025. While Gill was named the captain of the team, Pant was named as his deputy.
"Pant is one of our better batters in the last couple of years. He will help Gill out with all the experience [he has]. At the moment, these two are the guys we feel will take the team forward," chief selector Ajit Agarkar said after naming Pant as the vice-captain.
Pant made his Test debut for India in 2018 and did not take long to become an indispensable part of the team. He has been one of India's key players in Tests since his debut. With the likes of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retiring from Tests, Pant is one of the most experienced batters in the team now.
