Big surprises are on the cards for the India National Cricket Team as the national selectors gear up to announce the squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 in the UAE from September 9. All eyes are on Shreyas Iyer, but the chances of his return to the T20I side look very slim, thanks to Gautam Gambhir.
Shreyas Iyer has been out of India’s T20I setup since Gautam Gambhir took charge as head coach in July 2024, with his last appearance coming way back in December 2023. His comeback, if it happens, could push either Shivam Dube or Rinku Singh out of the Asia Cup 2025 squad.
Shreyas Iyer set for Asia Cup 2025 heartbreak despite IPL 2025 heroics
And the Indian selectors are unlikely to take this decision, as both have been part of the team’s plans under Gambhir. As reported by Cricbuzz, Shreyas Iyer may not be as fortunate’ to be picked for the upcoming Asian championship in the UAE.

Shreyas Iyer has so far played 14 Tests, 70 ODIs, and 51 T20Is, scoring 811, 2845, and 1104 runs, respectively, for India. Shreyas Iyer has also been impressive in the IPL over the years, and in the last season, the right-handed batter scored over 600 runs to take Punjab Kings to the final.
Shubman Gill and Mohammed Siraj to miss out on the Asia Cup 2025 squad
Well, the Indian selectors are all set to meet in Mumbai on August 19 to select the squad for the upcoming continental tournament. Even after standout performances in the recent Test series in England, Shubman Gill and Mohammed Siraj are unlikely to be picked for the tournament.
Gill has been in dream form in 2025, scoring over 750 runs in the recent five-match Test series against England and over 650 runs in the IPL 2025 for Gujarat Titans. But despite those big numbers, the Indian Test captain’s place in the T20I team is not certain.
The problem is that Gill’s runs came in Test cricket and as an IPL opener. For the Asia Cup 2025, the Indian selectors are likely to continue with the opening pair of Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson. Yashasvi Jaiswal is also fighting for a spot as the backup opener, and presently, he is leading the race against Gill.

Jitesh Sharma was almost locked as India’s second wicketkeeper
The middle order also looks set with Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav, and Rinku Singh. Shivam Dube and Washington Sundar are competing for the extra batting all-rounder role, and either of them will make the cut. Jitesh Sharma is almost sure to be picked as the second wicketkeeper.
Speaking about Mohammed Siraj, India’s star performer in the recent England series, might surprisingly miss out on the Asia Cup squad. Jasprit Bumrah will lead the pace attack, with Arshdeep Singh and one of Prasidh Krishna or Harshit Rana likely to join him.
Hardik Pandya will also be part of the pace attack. Mohammed Shami will reportedly not be considered for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025. Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakaravarthy, Ravi Bishnoi, and Axar Patel are the spin options. Sundar could still make the cut, but he is not guaranteed.
