India star announces retirement from all cricket in the middle of England series

India Women’s middle-order batter Veda Krishnamurthy announced her retirement from all forms of cricket, drawing curtains on a remarkable career that spanned over a decade, on Friday, July 25. In her emotional retirement post, she hinted at taking up a new role to give back to the game.
Veda Krishnamurthy, who was known for her fearless strokeplay and fighting spirit, represented India in 48 ODIs and 76 T20Is and played a key role in some of India’s most iconic wins, including the 2017 Women’s World Cup campaign, where India finished as runners-up.

Hailing from the small town of Kadur in Karnataka, Veda rose through the ranks with sheer determination and love for the game. Veda captained Karnataka and Railways in domestic cricket. Both teams played a big part in shaping her career.

In her long retirement later on social media, she also mentioned how her time with Railways helped her grow immensely. The cricketer also thanked her family, especially her late sister, for being her constant support system. She also expressed her gratitude to her coaches, mentors, and teammates, calling them an essential part of her cricketing life.
Veda acknowledged the BCCI, KSCA, Railways, and KIOC for giving her platforms to showcase her skills and grow as a cricketer. As she steps away from the field, the Gujarat Giants batter has expressed her desire to stay involved with the game whether it’s mentoring young players or contributing in other roles, the right-handed batter is ready for her second innings in cricket.

Announcing her retirement, Veda wrote on Instagram: “A small-town girl with big dreams. From Kadur’s quiet lanes to wearing the India jersey with pride. This game gave me everything: joy, pain, purpose, and family. Today, I say goodbye to playing, but not to cricket.”
She further added, “To my family, teammates, coaches, friends, and every supporter behind the scenes, thank you. And to the fans, your love, even from afar, meant more than you’ll ever know. Ready to give back to the game that gave me a life. I played with fire in my heart and pride in every step. Always for the team. Always for India.”

Veda Krishnamurthy's career in numbers
Notably, Veda also played four matches in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) and scored 22 runs. She also played nine Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) matches for the Hobart Hurricanes and scored 144 runs.
In ODI cricket, she scored 829 runs from 49 innings, which included eight fifties. She made an impressive start with a half-century on debut against England in Derby back in 2012. Among all her knocks, her 70 off just 45 balls against New Zealand in the 2017 World Cup was the most memorable.
Her impressive innings helped India Women qualify for the semi-finals of the tournament. Later that year, Veda achieved another milestone by becoming one of the few Indian women to play in the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) after signing with the Hobart Hurricanes. In T20 Internationals, Veda scored 875 runs in 63 innings and had two fifties to her name.
