The International Cricket Council (ICC) is considering alternate venues for the upcoming Women's T20 World Cup 2024, which is scheduled to take place in Bangladesh in October this year.

According to the latest news, India has emerged as a potential backup venue amid recent political turmoil in Bangladesh.

Bangladesh is currently facing significant anti-government protests, leading to several deaths and the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who left the country on Monday.

Protestors have targeted properties of Awami League members, including the residence of former cricketer Mashrafe Mortaza.

Following a recent meeting in Colombo, International Cricket Council officials hoped that the situation in Bangladesh would stabilize in time for the Women's T20 World Cup 2024.

However, the escalating political unrest has now made the situation more serious, raising concerns about holding the tournament in Bangladesh.

ICC Closely Monitoring Developments Ahead Of Women's T20 World Cup 2024

According to a Cricbuzz report, the International Cricket Council may move the Women's T20 World Cup 2024 from Bangladesh.

The report added that the ICC is expected to make an official decision within a week. India has emerged as a strong contender to host the upcoming ICC T20 tournament later this year.

“The ICC is closely monitoring developments in coordination with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), their security agencies, and our own independent security consultants. Our priority is the safety and well-being of all participants,” an ICC spokesperson said in a statement.

"All places with favorable weather will be in the mix if it becomes clear that we can't play in Bangladesh. That may or may not be the case," said an ICC member in the know of the developments.

ICC To Speak Bangladesh Cricket Board officials

Australia, England, and India have advised against traveling there. India and Sri Lanka can host the tournament on short notice.

However, Sri Lanka's rainy season in October and potential visa issues for Pakistan's team in India are concerns. The International Cricket Council may consider countries in the same time zone as Bangladesh.

The ICC will soon consult with Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) officials on hosting the Women’s T20 World Cup in Dhaka and Sylhet.

While BCB’s feedback will be considered, the International Cricket Council Board may independently decide on the venue for the tournament.

The Women’s T20 World Cup is scheduled to be played from October 3 to 20 in Bangladesh. Ten teams are set to compete in 23 matches over 18 days at two venues: Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka and Sylhet International Cricket Stadium in Sylhet.

The ICC last moved a global tournament in 2021. The ICC shifted the men’s T20 World Cup from India to the UAE and Oman due to Covid-19. South Africa hosted the last edition of the Under-19 World Cup when Sri Lanka Cricket was banned.
