After the T20I series, the focus will move towards the ODIs. The 50-over series between the Sri Lanka National Cricket Team and the India National Cricket Team will be played from 2nd August. The last two matches are scheduled to take place on 4th and 7th August respectively.
Here are the fixtures for the India vs Sri Lanka white-ball games
T20I Series
• 1st T20I – 27th July
• 2nd T20I – 28th July
• 3rd T20I – 30th July
ODI Series
• 1st ODI – 2nd August
• 2nd ODI – 4th August
• 3rd ODI – 7th August
The T20I series against Sri Lanka will be the second series for India after the T20 World Cup 2024. They will be touring Zimbabwe after the World Cup and will be playing five 5 T20Is on their tour. Young Shubman Gill will be captaining the team there.
The squad for the Zimbabwe tour has seen quite a few IPL performers getting chances for their heroics in the league. The likes of Abhishek Sharma, Riyan Parag and others have been named in the team and they would be keen to make an impact and lock their place in the team.
It is expected that India is likely to name a young team for the series against Sri Lanka. The team is expected to go through the transition and therefore young guns are likely to get an opportunity in the series against the Wanindu Hasaranga-led side.
ODI series against Sri Lanka - a crucial preparation for India for Champions Trophy 2025
On the other hand, the ODI series against Sri Lanka will be an ideal preparation for Team India for the Champions Trophy 2025. The event will be played in Pakistan in February-March next year and therefore it is likely that a full-strength team will be playing against Sri Lanka.
India will be playing very less ODIs before the Champions Trophy 2025 and hence the senior players would be keen to play as many as games as possible ahead of the Sri Lanka ODIs. This will also be the first ODI series for Rohit Sharma-led side after the T20 World Cup 2024.
It is also expected that the new India head coach is likely to take over the charge of the team from the Sri Lanka series. Gautam Gambhir so far looks like the front-runner to take over the role. There have been reports that he will be joining the team from the Sri Lanka series and VVS Laxman is likely to company team in Zimbabwe.
