India eyes ninth Asia Cup title

The defending champions, India, will start their Asia Cup 2025 journey against the UAE at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on September 10. The Indian cricket team led by Suryakumar Yadav is aiming to win the tournament for the ninth time.

In this edition, the Men in Blue will play without their key players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Despite the absence of Virat and Rohit, India enters the tournament as favorites, having already claimed eight Asia Cup titles, more than any other team.

As India gears up to begin its Asia Cup 2025 campaign, all eyes will be on the India vs. Pakistan game, given the recent military tensions between the two countries. However, many feel that India should boycott matches against Pakistan in the ICC or other multi-team events.

BCCI rules out India vs Pakistan boycott, cites government guidelines

But the BCCI secretary, Devajit Saikia, explained why a boycott is not possible. Saikia has made it clear that the BCCI is following the guidelines provided by the Indian government regarding sporting relations with Pakistan.

The policies set by the central government are intended to guide national sports federations in making decisions about participation in multinational tournaments.

Saikia has noted that refusing to play Pakistan in the multi-nation events could lead them to face strict penalties from governing bodies like the International Cricket Council (ICC) or the Asian Cricket Council (ACC). It could also negatively affect the growth and careers of young Indian cricketers.

Devajit Saikia was quoted as saying by NDTV: “The technicality regarding participation of the Indian team, for cricket or any other sport, is that the central government's sports department has laid down the guidelines as well as the policies.

While framing the policy, I am sure that the central government has taken a very cautious decision to lay out the guidelines that will help the sports federations at the national level. Accordingly, we can take a call regarding participation in any multinational tournament.”

Why Asia Cup 2025 shifted to UAE?

Notably, India was originally set to host the 2025 Asia Cup, but due to ongoing tensions with Pakistan, the tournament was shifted to the UAE. Actually, both the BCCI and PCB have agreed to play their matches at neutral venues during the ICC and ACC events.

To make arrangements easier and keep the tournament on schedule, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) has moved the entire Asia Cup 2025 to the UAE.
