Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar feels that Indian Cricket moved on quickly after Team India’s shocking defeat to Australia in the ICC ODI World Cup 2023. Sunil Gavaskar also feels that Indian fans moved on too quickly with the focus shifting to other tournaments and IPL 2024 auction.

After India lost the ODI World Cup final to Australia on November 19 last month, the defeat gripped the entire nation’s cricket lovers. India dominated the tournament by winning 10 games in a row ahead of the final. However, they lost the most crucial match to Australia by 6 wickets.

Just four days after the defeat, India played a five-match T20I series against Australia. Later, the IPL 2024 hit the headlines and Hardik Pandya leaving his Gujarat Titans franchise became the talk of the town. Also, India’s tour of South Africa 2023-24 has gained much viewership from Indian fans.

Indian Cricket Showed It Had The Ability To Move On: Sunil Gavaskar

In his column for Mid-Day, cricketer-turned-commentator Sunil Gavaskar highlighted how Indian fans moved on quickly after India’s World Cup loss to Australia. However, he also added that he was unbothered about India’s 4-1 victory against Australia in the previous series.

“Barely had the tears dried up after the unexpected loss in the final of the ICC World Cup, Indian cricket showed it had the ability to move on. The focus was shifted to the transfer window for the IPL next season.

“Yes, there was a five-match T20 series being played between India and Australia, but hey, after what was a memorable World Cup, who was bothered about the T20 series except the staunch Indian cricket lovers.

“The big boys from both teams were not playing anyway, so there was no compelling reason to watch the T20 series after two months of top-class ODI cricket”, Sunil Gavaskar wrote.

The former Indian skipper also noted that Indian fans were more interested in the IPL 2024 transfers and retentions, which began just after the World Cup final defeat.

“Instead, there was much more intrigue and interest in the transfer and trade, which was to be done within that week’s deadline. Who was going to be transferred, who was going to be released, who was going where, was what the Indian fan was looking at,” Sunil Gavaskar further wrote.

Meanwhile, the IPL 2024 auction is set to take place on December 19 in Dubai. All the franchises are gearing up for the auction. Indian fans are also keeping a tab on the event to know where some of their favorite players will end up for IPL 2024.
