Indian Cricket Team Test captain:
Shubman Gill is India's Test captain. The right-handed batsman was named the Test captain in May 2025 after Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from the longest format of the game. Before being made the Test captain, he had not led the team in any Test or ODIs although he led the Indian team in five T20Is during the tour of Zimbabwe in 2024.
Gill became the captain after representing Team India in 32 Tests. In those 32 games, he made 1893 runs at an average of 35.05. With the likes of Rohit as well as Virat Kohli retiring from Tests, Gill will have his task cut out as a captain.
Indian Cricket Team ODI captain:
Rohit Sharma is India's present ODI captain. The veteran batsman was leading the team across all the three formats before retiring from T20Is and Tests. After replacing Virat Kohli as the India captain in 2021, Rohit led India to the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup and the World Test Championship final as well.
In 2024, India won the T20 World Cup under his captaincy. After the victory in the final, Rohit announced his retirement from T20s. In 2025, he led India to victory in the ICC Champions Trophy. In May, the right-handed batsman announced his retirement from Tests as well.
He is now the captain of the team in only ODIs. Rohit is yet to win the ODI World Cup as a player or a captain and has his eyes set on the 2027 World Cup. If the selectors and the team-management back him, he is likely to play ODIs at least till 2027.
Indian Cricket Team T20I captain:
Suryakumar Yadav is India's T20I captain. After Rohit announced his retirement from T20Is in 2024, he was replaced by Suryakumar as the T20I captain. While Hardik Pandya was the vice-captain and was also the favourite to become the captain, the selectors and the team-management appointed Suryakumar as the captain.
The right-handed batsman has been one of the best T20 batsman in the world for quite some time now. He will now be looking to prove himself as a captain too. With the T20 World Cup to take place in 2026 at home, Suryakumar will look to guide India to glory.
