Veteran Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan was granted a divorce from his estranged wife Aesha Mukerji in the family court of Delhi on Wednesday, October 4. The divorce was granted by the family court based on grounds of mental cruelty cited by the petitioner.
Judge Harish Kumar recognized that Shikhar Dhawan had suffered mental distress due to being separated from his son Zoravar for an extended period. The judge accepted Dhawan’s claims, noting that both parties had agreed to dissolve their 11-year marriage.
Shikhar Dhawan And Ayesha Mukerji Had Agreed To Take Divorce By Mutual Consent
Shikhar Dhawan and his wife have been living separately since August 8, 2020. Aesha didn’t contest the allegations or defend herself in the divorce petition. The court granted Dhawan visitation rights to see his son in India and Australia, as well as video calls.
“There is no dispute that both parties had agreed to take divorce by mutual consent and that their marriage is otherwise dead long ago and have not been living as husband and wife since August 8, 2020,” Harish Kumar said.
Ayesha Mukerji Decided To Leave This Matter Uncontested
The court statement highlighted Aesha’s decision not to contest as a willingness to accept guilt for matrimonial offences and issue a divorce decree.
“Respondent’s/ estranged wife intentional decision to leave this matter uncontested also shows her desire that the court should pass decree of divorce even at the cost of holding her guilty of the matrimonial offence as she knows that no harm could be caused to her even if she is held to have treated the petitioner with cruelty because she has already obtained sufficient favourable orders from the Federal Circuit and Family Court in Australia,” the court said.
“This thought of her has given her the courage to not abide by the order dated March 2, 2023 and June 6. 2023 of this court deliberately and intentionally. Hence, the facts and circumstances of the present case as discussed above petitioners are entitled to a decree of divorce on the grounds of cruelty,” Court added.
Shikhar Dhawan has represented the Indian team in 34 Tests, 167 ODIs, and 68 T20Is, amassing 2315 runs, 6793 runs, and 1759 runs in the respective formats. He last played for India against Bangladesh in 2022.
