The Indian government has issued an ultimatum, issuing an official statement mentioning the participation of India alongside Pakistan in international events, while continuing the norm of not holding any bilateral series between the archrival nations.

The official statement has been served just before the much-opposed Asia Cup, which has been scheduled to be played in the UAE from the 9th of September. India, the official hosts of the tournament, were forced by the ACC into participation, and they also scheduled a match between India vs Pakistan as per the ACC's deal with the broadcasters.

The ICT fans, as well as the people of India, were outraged by the fact that BCCI had sidelined the sacrifices made during Operation Sindoor and had forgotten the lives lost during the Pehalgam attack, as they agreed to host Pakistan in the Asia Cup. This led politicians to blame the BCCI for financial interest; however, the Indian government has now clearly come in support of the decision.

The government guideline states that the bilateral events between the two nations, which have been stopped for a long time now, would remain cancelled; however, they have confirmed that multinational events would continue to see the two teams taking on each other.

They have also assured that the visa processes will be made easy for the players, team officials, office bearers, and more associated with the visiting nations, which would make India a more preferable destination for hosting international sporting events.

India's policy towards International Sporting Events

India's approach to sports events involving Pakistan reflects its overall policy in dealing with that country.

So far, as bilateral sports events in each other's countries are concerned, Indian teams will not be participating in competitions in Pakistan. Nor will we permit Pakistani teams to play in India.

About international and multilateral events, in India or abroad, we are guided by the practices of international sports bodies and the interests of our own sports persons. It is also relevant to take into account India's emergence as a credible venue to host international sports events.

Accordingly, Indian teams and individual players will take part in international events that also have teams or players from Pakistan. Similarly, Pakistani players and teams will be able to participate in such multilateral events hosted by India.

The policy also sets new standards for India as a Sporting destination

To position India as a preferred destination for hosting international sporting events, the visa process for sports persons, team officials, technical personnel, and office-bearers of International Sports Governing Bodies shall be simplified.

In respect of office-bearers of International Sports Governing Bodies, a multi-entry visa shall be granted on a priority basis for the duration of their official tenure, subject to a maximum period of five years.

This shall facilitate their smooth movement into and within the country, under international norms. Due protocol and courtesies, as per established practice, shall be extended to the Heads of International Sports Governing Bodies during their visits to India.
