India National Cricket Team are set to reach another landmark in Test cricket when they take on Sri Lanka in the opening match of their two-Test series in Galle. The upcoming Test will be India's 600th match in the longest format, marking another significant chapter in a journey that began in 1932.

Team India will play their 600th Test when the first Test against Sri Lanka begins in Galle. Their record across the first 599 matches stands at 186 wins, 188 defeats, one tie and 224 draws.
India's progress through each block of 100 Tests also shows a clear rise in their winning record. They won only 10 of their first 100 Tests, while the number increased to 25 between Tests 101 and 200. India registered 21 wins in the next 100 Tests before recording 32 victories between Tests 301 and 400.
The biggest jump came in the later stages. India won 42 Tests between their 401st and 500th matches, while they have already registered 56 wins in their last 99 Tests heading into the 600th.

India's two-match Test series against Sri Lanka holds big importance
The two-Test series is also important in the context of the ongoing World Test Championship cycle. India currently sit fifth in the points table with 48.15 points from nine matches, having won four and lost four. Sri Lanka are sixth with 41.67 points from four matches, including one win and one defeat.
The upcoming series will also be an unfamiliar experience for most of India's current squad in Sri Lankan conditions. Among the players in the squad, Ravindra Jadeja, KL Rahul and Kuldeep Yadav are the only ones who have previously played Test cricket in Sri Lanka. The rest are set to experience Test cricket in the country for the first time.
India's recent Test history in Sri Lanka also gives them plenty of confidence. They have won the last two Test series between the teams, including a 3-0 clean sweep in 2017 and a 2-1 victory in 2015.
However, India have not always dominated the fixture. Their last Test series defeat against Sri Lanka came in 2008, when the hosts won 2-1.
That was a very different era in Indian cricket. Sachin Tendulkar had 81 international centuries, Virat Kohli had not made his international debut, Rohit Sharma had no international centuries and MS Dhoni had captained India in only one Test.

Virat Kohli is India's most successful Test captain against Sri Lanka on their home soil. Kohli led India in six Tests in Sri Lanka and guided them to five victories, comfortably ahead of the other Indian captains.
MS Dhoni, Sourav Ganguly and Anil Kumble each recorded one Test win as captain in Sri Lanka. Mohammad Azharuddin also led India to one victory in four Tests. Sachin Tendulkar and Kapil Dev, meanwhile, did not win a Test in Sri Lanka as captains.
