The England cricket team became the first team to reach the semifinals of the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024 with a thumping 10-wicket win over the USA in Barbados on June 23. South Africa also joined the defending champions from Group 2 in the top four of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024.

On the other hand, India is in a strong position to secure a spot in the semifinals of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024, but their last Super-8 match against Australia remains crucial. It will be played on Monday, June 24, at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground in Saint Lucia.

India to play against England if they finish Super 8 on top

A victory against Australia would guarantee the Men in Blue the top spot in Group 1. However, a loss could result in them being surpassed by both Australia and Afghanistan if Rashid Khan and his team win their last Super-8 match against Bangladesh on June 25 in Kingstown.

However, a washout between India and Australia would take Rohit Sharma and Co. to the T20 World Cup 2024 semifinals, where they will face the defending champions England in Guyana on June 27.

Meanwhile, Australia and India look strong contenders to progress to the knockouts of the ongoing mega ICC event from Group 1, but chances have not completely ended for Afghanistan and Bangladesh to make it to the top four.

Actually, Australia's unexpected defeat against Afghanistan in St. Vincent has placed the 2021 T20 World Cup champions in a precarious position ahead of their final Super-8 match against India.

If the Kangaroos manage to beat Team India in their last Super-8 clash, they will secure a spot in the semi-finals of the ongoing showpiece event in the Caribbean Islands. However, India’s win over Australia could open the door for Afghanistan or Bangladesh to take their place in the semifinals of the ongoing T20 World Cup in 2024.

Bangladesh and Afghanistan still in the mix to qualify for the T20 World Cup 2024 semifinals

Speaking about Bangladesh’s semifinal chances, if India manages to defeat Australia, the Tigers will subsequently need a convincing win over Afghanistan to improve their net run rate, surpassing both their Asian rivals and the Australians, to qualify for the knockouts of the ongoing tournament.

On the other hand, Afghanistan's surprise win over Australia has thrown Group 1's semi-final race wide open. If the Afghan side manages to beat Bangladesh in their final Super-8 match on Tuesday in Kingstown, they can make it to the top-4 of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024.

Apart from this, the Afghanistan cricket team’s semifinal hopes are also dependent on the outcome of the India versus Australia Super-8 clash. If India beats Australia in Saint Lucia on Monday, it will smooth Afghanistan’s way to the semifinals.

Notably, the Super-8 matches of Group 2 concluded with the South Africa versus West Indies game in Antigua, where the Proteas side crushed the co-hosts by three wickets via the DLS method to knock them out of the T20 World Cup 2024. England and Australia have qualified for the semifinals from Group 2, and they will face the top two teams from Group 1.
