Former cricketer Aakash Chopra has opened up on India's chances to qualify for the World Test Championship final to be played next year. With just two Tests remaining before the WTC final, Chopra is still optimistic about India's chances to secure a qualification.
With just two Tests remaining in the current WTC cycle, the Men in Blue are in serious danger of being ruled out of the race for the final. India needs to win the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia by any means to ensure themselves a qualification.
Aakash Chopra on India's chances for WTC final
While speaking in a video on his YouTube channel, Aakash Chopra discussed about India's chances to qualify for the WTC final next year. He was optimistic and mentioned that the Men in Blue need to win at any cost now.
"India can definitely reach the WTC final. Of course, you need to win the series. The series cannot end in a draw. We will be out if the series ends in a draw. You had the chance of two wins and a draw before Gabba but since this game ended as a draw, you need to win the next two games," Aakash Chopra said.
The Men in Blue need to win the next two Tests of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy to secure a place in the WTC final without relying on the other results. Two wins will take their points percentage tally to 60.53 while Australia will only reach 57.02 even if they win their next series in Sri Lanka 2-0.
However, if the Men in Blue win one Test and the other one ends in a draw, they will reach 57.02 and Australia can get past them if they win 2-0 in Sri Lanka. If the ongoing series ends in a draw, then the Men in Blue will get to 55.26. In this case, Australia will need to lose by at least a 0-1 margin to Sri Lanka or South Africa lose 0-2 to Pakistan.
Will be a miracle if India wins in Melbourne and Sydney - Aakash Chopra
However, Aakash Chopra also admitted that it would be a miracle if the Men in Blue managed to win the series. According to him, the Men in Blue were not expected to win in Perth but they won.
"You will be able to leave here after winning the series 3-1. That would be absolutely miraculous because no one expected us to win in Perth but we won there. We didn't perform well in the pink-ball Test match in Adelaide and we collapsed there but we somehow held on to a draw in Gabba," he noted.
Series closely poised at 1-1
The ongoing Test series between Australia and the Men in Blue is currently level at 1-1. the Men in Blue won the opening Test of the series in Perth but Australia bounced back to win the second Test match. The third Test at Brisbane ended in a tame draw.
Australia dominated the Gabba Test for the most part but persistent rain over the period of five days didn't allow the match to be completed. The next two Tests will be played in Melbourne and Sydney and will be important for both teams to secure qualification.
