Former Australian speedster Damien Wright has joined Punjab Kings as its bowling coach for IPL 2021. Damien Wright, who was one of the most promising fast bowlers in the country, could not don the national colours despite playing 123 first-class, 106 List-A, and 26 T20 fixtures. The Victorian will likely replace Charl Langeveldt, who had been the bowling coach last season.
Damien Wright reportedly has coaching experience in New Zealand, Australia, and Bangladesh, along with the Big Bash League franchises. Wright, who kickstarted his first-class career in 1997-98, played first-class cricket till 2011, turned to coaching after quitting the sport. As far as franchise cricket is concerned, the 45-year old has worked with the Hobart Hurricanes and Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League.
The Punjab Kings have made a series of overhauls since the last season, including changing their name from Kings XI Punjab to Punjab Kings ahead of IPL 2021. The franchise changed their captain from Ravichandran Ashwin to KL Rahul, with Anil Kumble, Andy Flower, Wasim Jaffer, and Jony Rhodes joining their coaching staff.
Punjab Kings’ performance in IPL 2020:
Punjab Kings finished their IPL 2020 campaign in the sixth position, racking up six victories and enduring eight losses. Captain KL Rahul was in blistering form, mustering more than 600 runs in the tournament to bag the Orange Cap. The IPL 2021 auction saw the franchise securing the services of Jhye Richardson, Riley Meredith, Dawid Malan, Fabian Allen, Shahrukh Khan, and many more.
