Rajasthan Royals’ skipper Sanju Samson had an awkward and a comical start to his captaincy as he headed for the toss on the eve of their IPL 2021 season opener against the Punjab Kings. Sanju Samson took charge from Steve Smith ahead of IPL 2021 as Rajasthan Royals look to turn their fortunes around. While the Kerala batsman won the coin toss, he kept it back in his pocket.
After the match referee tossed the coin up and it fell in favour of Sanju Samson; he calmly put it back in his pocket and announced to Michael Slater his decision to bowl first. The keeper-batsman will have his first taste of leadership at perhaps the biggest stage of his career and has the responsibility of marshalling the team well to do better than they did in IPL 2020.

While the Royals started their last year’s edition with a bang, racking up a couple of wins, their form tapered off after that and remained inconsistent. The inaugural IPL champions did not get the runs consistently from Jos Buttler and their captain Steve Smith, while Samson also marginally struggled despite being their highest run-getter. Rajasthan’s season ended with six wins and eight losses, slumping to the bottom of the points table.
Ahead of IPL 2021, they invested heavily on seam-bowling all-rounder Chris Morris, dishing out INR 16.25 crores. Furthermore, they re-signed Liam Livingstone and purchased Chetan Sakariya, Mustafizur Rahman, Shivam Dube, and many others. Their four overseas players for the first match of IPL 2021 are Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes, Morris, and Rahman.
