A masterclass by Glenn Maxwell and AB de Villiers and an all-round bowling performance has helped Royal Challengers Bangalore pick up their third consecutive win of the season as the Virat Kohli-led unit thumped Kolkata Knight Riders by 38 runs in Chennai.

Chasing 205, Kolkata Knight Riders came out all guns blazing in the powerplay as opener Shubman Gill and then Rahul Tripathi dished out sumptuous strokeplay.

Gill laid into Kyle Jamieson in the 2nd over as the young opener smoked the Kiwi pacer for a couple of sixes and four, the highlight of them being the flat-batted six over point.

But Jamieson eventually had the last laugh as Gill, in an attempt for another biggie, smashed it uppishly towards mid-on, only to see Dan Christian take a stunning catch.

Rahul Tripathi continued with the momentum as he smoked a 20-ball 25 which included as many as five fours but an attempt to heave Washington Sundar led to his undoing on the last ball of the powerplay.

Kolkata Knight Riders racked up 57 runs in the powerplay but in the next three overs, Yuzvendra Chahal landed them back-to-back blows. Chahal dismissed the dangerous Rana after the southpaw mistimed the slog-sweep before he trapped Dinesh Karthik plumb in front with a straighter one.

Eoin Morgan smashed three sixes off Maxwell within a space of two overs. And, while he got a lucky reprieve when he top-edged a slower delivery from Harshal Patel, the bowler eventually had the last laugh as he knocked over KKR skipper with another change of pace stuff.

With 84 needed off the last 30 balls, Andre Russell laid into Yuzvendra Chahal in the 17th over as he smoked him for a six and three consecutive fours to bring the equation down to 59 off the last three overs.

Dre Russ crunched Jamieson for a monstrous six on the second ball of the next over but Jamieson fought back by knocking over both Shakib and Pat Cummins in the same over.

Mohammed Siraj backed it up with a brilliant penultimate over against Russell in which he dished out wide yorkers at will to ensure that he gave just one run. Harshal Patel did the rest in the final over by dismissing Dre Russ to ensure that Royal Challengers Bangalore notch up their third consecutive win of the season.

Glenn Maxwell and AB de Villiers’ masterclass propelled Royal Challengers Bangalore to 4/204

Batting first, Royal Challengers Bangalore got off to the worst possible start thanks to Varun Chakravarthy, who claimed two wickets in the form of Virat Kohli and Rajat Patidar.

Chakravarthy got rid of Kohli on the very first ball of his spell when he tossed one outside off to force the Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper throw his hands at the ball without reaching the pitch of the crease as Rahul Tripathi completed a brilliant backward running catch.

The leg-spinner then proceeded to knock over Rajat Patidar for a 2-ball 1 when he fired in one straight into his pads, leaving RCB reeling at 2/9 after 2 overs.

But just like the last two games, Glenn Maxwell proved to be the savior for Royal Challengers Bangalore. Eoin Morgan made the mistake of replacing Chakravarthy with Shakib Al Hasan and Kolkata Knight Riders paid dearly for it.

Maxwell laid into Shakib by cutting and heaving him over long-on and reverse-sweeping him for three fours and a six across two overs to bring back the momentum in RCB’s innings.

Maxwell was equally imperious against the pace of Pat Cummins and Prasidh Krishna as he notched up regular boundaries even as Devdutt Padikkal struggled at the other end.

Eoin Morgan finally brought back Varun in the attack in the 8th over but by then Maxwell was already set and the swashbuckler proceeded to welcome him with a four and a six- the fact that Chakravarthy bowled a no-ball didn’t help Kolkata Knight Riders’ cause either.

Maxwell brought up his 2nd consecutive fifty off just 28 balls in the next over bowled by Pat Cummins and he celebrated that by hitting Krishna and Harbhajan for two fours in his next six deliveries.

Devdutt Padikkal (25 off 28 balls) perished after he miscued the attempted pull-stroke off Prasidh Krishna in the 12th over to bring AB de Villiers to the crease.

Maxwell and AB de Villiers laid into Varun Chakravarthy in the 15th over of the innings. While AB smoked the wrist-spinner past long-off for a four, Maxwell brought out the switch-hit to deposit him over cover for a maximum as RCB blazed their way to 3/134 in just 15 overs.

De Villiers, like Maxwell, was in some mood. He proceeded to drill Krishna past mid-off before swatting him past midwicket for consecutive boundaries in the following over as the duo brought up the 50-stand in just 29 balls.

Maxwell was eventually dismissed for 49-ball 78 but there was no respite for KKR as Ab de Genius took centerstage to unleash another AB de-esque assault.

He cut, pulled, drove, late cut with absolute disdain to notch up a 27-ball fifty. And, if that wasn’t enough, De Villiers laid into Andre Russell in his last two overs by smashing him for 38 runs to eventually end up with an unbeaten 34-ball 76 as Royal Challengers Bangalore piled up 4/204.
