MSK Prasad, a former BCCI head selector, suggested to NDTV that the unrestricted Jadeja should have found the burden of leadership too much to handle.
On Saturday evening, Ravindra Jadeja surprised everyone by resigning his captaincy of the Chennai Super Kings to allow former captain, MS Dhoni, to come back to the head of the defending IPL winners.
Dhoni has stepped down as CSK skipper before the IPL 2022 season to make way for Jadeja. Unfortunately, the outcomes were unsatisfactory. Only two of CSK’s first eight matches saw Jadeja lead them to victory. CSK is now in ninth place in the 10-team competition and is in danger of missing out on the playoffs.
In a statement given by CSK, Jadeja felt compelled to focus on his games. “Ravindra Jadeja has opted to step down as skipper to focus on his career and has asked MS Dhoni to represent CSK. MS Dhoni has agreed to head CSK in the long run, allowing Jadeja to concentrate on his game “
‘It requires courage to give up captaincy and he has done that’: MSK Prasad
Former BCCI chief selector MSK Prasad commented on the incident, telling NDTV that the unrestricted Jadeja may have thought the burden of captaincy was too much for him to handle.
“I believe he believed his performance was being harmed as a result of his captaincy responsibility. If you look at his efforts over the last few years, you’ll notice that they’ve become better. “Jadeja may not have desired the extra burden of leadership to damage his performance at this juncture of his career,” Prasad said.
“Knowing who Jadeja is, he needs to be able to play freely. He may have believed that captaincy should have no bearing on the game. I believe Jadeja has made a courageous decision to better serve the team’s position as a player. Giving up captaincy takes courage, and he has shown it,” MSK Prasad Added.
The Super Kings will next play on Sunday (May 1), when they face the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the season’s 46th match.
