Tamil Nadu batter Shahrukh Khan opted for Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan to be the captain of Punjab Kings (PBKS) ahead of Mayank Agarwal for the IPL 2022.
Dhawan has played 192 IPL matches for Delhi Capitals, Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad over the years. He aggregates 5,783 runs at the strike rate of 126.63 and averages 34.63, he has 44 50-plus scores and a couple of hundreds to his name.
Punjab Kings bought Shikhar Dhawan for INR 8.25 crores
In IPL 2021, Dhawan was the leading run-scorer for Capitals with 587 runs from 16 innings. The southpaw was released by the franchise during the IPL 2022 retention window.
Dhawan was bought by Punjab Kings for a sum of INR 8.25 crores after defeating the likes of Capitals and Rajasthan Royals in the bidding contest.
Punjab Kings need to fill the captaincy post after they released the swashbuckling opener, KL Rahul, last year. Rahul was appointed Punjab’s captain in 2020 but was released by the franchise in the retention window after he was in close ties to join a new IPL team.
Rahul was one of the picks of the Sanjiv Goenka owned Lucknow Super Giants and was also named the captain of the team.
There was a lot of speculation that Rahul’s Karnataka teammate Mayank Agarwal could take over the leadership role as he was the vice-captain of the team last season and also was one of the two players retained by the franchise ahead of the mega auction.
I would say Shikhar Dhawan: Shahrukh Khan
Shahrukh, who played 11 matches for Punjab Kings last season, was once again purchased by the franchise for a whopping amount of INR 9 crores. The Tamil Nadu player was asked who could be the next captain of the Punjab outfit, he went for the senior man Dhawan.
“I would say Shikhar Dhawan because he has so much experience. He has a different aura and he has a very dynamic personality,” Shahrukh said in a mid-auction show on Star Sports.
According to a report by Cricket Next, Dhawan will reportedly be announced as the captain of the Indian Premier League franchise Punjab Kings.
