Lucknow Super Giants’ backroom staff could see more changes as Gautam Gambhir is reportedly willing to part ways with the franchise ahead of the next edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Ahead of IPL 2023, the Lucknow-based franchise has already changed its head coach. After parting ways with Andy Flower, Lucknow Super Giants have named former Australia opener and head coach Justin Langer as the replacement. And it looks like Gautam Gambhir could also follow Flower out of the franchise.
Both Flower and Gautam Gambhir were part of the team’s backroom staff for its first two IPL seasons. In both seasons, Lucknow Super Giants made it to the playoffs in the ten-team competition before deciding to sack Flower for Langer.
The latest rumor has started doing the rounds after Lucknow Super Giants roped in former India chief selector MSK Prasad as a strategic consultant. Prasad’s hiring is just a part of the major rejig of the franchise’s backroom staff that began with the sacking of Flower and the appointment of Langer. And according to Hindi news outlet Dainik Jagran, Gautam Gambhir is also likely to leave the franchise.
“After Andy Flower, Gautam Gambhir will now leave the IPL franchise… I can’t say anything further beyond this,” a source told the news outlet.
Gautam Gambhir to Kolkata Knight Riders?
The latest rumor will further intensify the reports of Gautam Gambhir joining Kolkata Knight Riders ahead of IPL 2024. The former India opener is reportedly in contact with KKR management for quite some time now. Gautam Gambhir is a highly respectable figure in KKR thanks to his highly successful stint as captain for the franchise.
Gautam Gambhir led the team to two IPL titles and made them one of the powerhouses of the IPL during his reign from 2011 to 2017. Chandrakant Pandit has been currently serving as the head coach of the franchise and failed to guide the team to the playoffs in his maiden IPL season this year. KKR have not won the IPL since 2014 and will be desperate to end their long wait next year.
