IPL 2025: Dwayne Bravo ditches MS Dhoni and CSK a night after retirement; joins rival franchise

Former West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo has been appointed as the mentor for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. Dwayne Bravo will also serve as a mentor across the Knight Riders' teams in various leagues following his retirement from all formats of the game.

Bravo announced his retirement from cricket during the middle of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2024. Bravo's campaign for the Trinbago Knight Riders ended abruptly after suffering a groin injury. Notably, he had earlier announced that the CPL 2024 would be his last appearance in the league.

On Friday, September 27, Dwayne Bravo was appointed as the mentor for the Kolkata Knight Riders for IPL 2025. Bravo took over from Gautam Gambhir, who moved on to become the head coach of the India National Cricket Team. The franchise took to social media to share Bravo's appointment.

Dwayne Bravo expressed his excitement about becoming a mentor for the Kolkata Knight Riders. He highlighted his decade-long association with the Trinbago Knight Riders in the CPL. Bravo described this new role as an ideal opportunity to mentor and coach the next generation of cricketers.

"I've been part of the Trinbago Knight Riders for the last 10 years in the CPL. Having played for and against the Knight Riders in various leagues, I have a lot of respect for how they operate," said Bravo, as quoted by Cricbuzz.

"The owners' passion, the professionalism of the management, and the family-like environment make it a special place. This is the perfect platform for me as I transition from playing to mentoring and coaching the next generation of players."

Venky Mysore, CEO of Knight Riders Group, shared his enthusiasm about Bravo's appointment as a mentor. He highlighted Bravo's strong desire to win and extensive experience, which will benefit the franchise and its players. Mysore also said that Bravo would contribute to their global franchises.

"DJ Bravo joining us is an exciting development. His relentless drive to win, along with his vast experience and deep knowledge, will greatly benefit our franchise and players. We're also pleased that Bravo will be involved with our other franchises globally, including CPL, MLC, and ILT20," Venky Mysore said.

Bravo has achieved significant success in T20 cricket. He secured five Caribbean Premier League titles, three of which were with the Trinbago Knight Riders. He also won a trophy with the Trinidad & Tobago Red Steel and one with the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots. Bravo is a two-time T20 World Cup champion.

Bravo played for the Mumbai Indians, Gujarat Lions, and Chennai Super Kings in the IPL. He won multiple title victories with MS Dhoni's CSK. Following his retirement from the IPL in 2022, Bravo took on the role of bowling coach for Chennai. Now, he has decided to start a new journey with KKR.
