Former SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) coach Tom Moody opened up about the IPL reintroducing the rule of a capped Indian player becoming uncapped if he hasn't played international cricket for five years. Tom Moody also revealed whether this rule was only brought back for legendary MS Dhoni.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India announced the guidelines for player retention on September 28.

The BCCI confirmed that capped Indian players who haven't played for India for five years can be retained as 'uncapped' players. This rule was first introduced in 2008 but was scrapped in 2021.

This rule allows franchises to retain capped Indian players, who haven't played for India in the last five years, as 'uncapped' for Rs 4 crore.

If released, they can set a lower base price at the auction to improve their chances of securing a deal. Many fans and experts think that this rule will benefit Dhoni.

MS Dhoni Is The Identity Of CSK - Tom Moody

Speaking on ESPNCricinfo, Tom Moody backed the rule allowing players to be considered 'uncapped' five years after their last international appearance.

He said that this rule allows players with longevity to continue contributing without being a financial burden on franchises.

The former SRH coach said that MS Dhoni is an extreme example due to his iconic status at CSK, but this rule benefits other players also. He added that veteran players like Dhoni performing in the IPL are good for the tournament.

"I think the easiest way to look at this is remove Dhoni as the example, because he is your extreme example. I think it's a great rule," Moody told ESPNCricinfo.

No issue with the uncapped Player rule

"It allows, if you're good enough and you've got longevity, a player to continue to play on the big stage and perform and have some sort of role without them, I suppose, making it difficult from a price perspective to retain those players because they may be the identity or, in Dhoni's case, he certainly is the identity of CSK. So I don't think that's an issue at all."

"I think the longer iconic players like Dhoni can play in the IPL and can physically deliver like he has been, it's good for the tournament," he added.

Dhoni last played for India in 2019

MS Dhoni retired from international cricket in August 2020 but played his last match for India in July 2019. The ODI World Cup semifinal between India and New Zealand was his last international appearance. Dhoni continues to represent Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the IPL despite his international retirement.

The 43-year-old batter has been part of every IPL season since 2008. He played for the Rising Pune Supergiants when Chennai Super Kings faced a two-year ban. MS Dhoni guided CSK to the record-equaling trophies. He has amassed 5,243 runs at an average of 39.13 with a strike rate of 137.54.
