As the Indian Premier League (IPL 2025) mega auction approaches, all 10 franchises are busy finalizing their retentions for the upcoming season of the tournament.
10 franchises finalized their retention list, and there were some surprising inclusions and exclusions, according to a report in news agency PTI.
The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) secured the title during the Indian Premier League 2024 season.
Skipper Shreyas Iyer led the Kolkata-based franchise to the title without any challenges. KKR secured their third IPL trophy and the first one since their last victory in 2014 under Gautam Gambhir's captaincy.
Teams Can Retain A Maximum Of Five Players For IPL 2025
Last month, the BCCI announced that teams can retain up to six players, with no restrictions on Indian or overseas players. The board also stated that teams will have to pay specific amounts for retentions: Rs. 18cr for the first and fourth retentions, Rs. 14cr for the second and fifth, and Rs. 11cr for the third.
Further, IPL teams can retain a maximum of two uncapped players. These uncapped players, who have never played for India, can be retained for Rs. 4 crore. Players who haven’t represented the Indian cricket team for over five years are also considered uncapped as per the Indian Premier League release.
The BCCI also allowed teams to use the Right to Match (RTM) option during the IPL 2025 mega auction. Teams can buy back a player by matching the highest bid. However, there's a new twist this time. If a team uses the RTM, the highest bidder can raise their offer to any amount.
Rohit Sharma To Be Retained By Mumbai Indians
According to a report in the news agency PTI, the Mumbai Indians have retained senior players Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, and Hardik Pandya. However, the report didn't mention whether Hardik will lead the team or whether any other player will take over the charge after the disastrous last season.
The report also states that the Punjab Kings will retain only one player, Arshdeep Singh, before the auction. Uncapped players Shashank Singh and Ashutosh Sharma, who shone with the bat in the last season, were ignored. Skipper KL Rahul is unlikely to be retained by the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).
