Former India batter Subramaniam Badrinath took an apparent dig at Virat Kohli after the latter's flop show yesterday as an opener against Ireland.
Virat Kohli and the Indian team played their 1st Group A match at the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 against Paul Stirling-led Ireland. The Nassau County Stadium based in New York, hosted the game which proved to be yet another low-scoring affair at the World Cup. We haven't seen a single 200+ score as of yet and the story remained the same yesterday as well.
It was also the first time in the ICC T20 WC history that Virat Kohli came to bat up top as an opener with skipper Rohit Sharma. Following a sensational IPL 2024 season which saw him score 741 runs from 15 games, Kohli is now being used as an opening batter. He usually comes in at number 3 but yesterday it was Rishabh Pant who came as a 1st down with Yashasvi Jaiswal not finding a spot.

What did Badrinath say about Virat Kohli?

Virat Kohli was a guest of just 13 minutes yesterday in what was his first game as an opener at a World Cup stage. It was also his first time playing in the tough conditions of New York and it will be fair to say that he wasn't ready for it. Kohli looked highly uncomfortable in the surface at NY with many also claiming that he lost his wicket as a result of rushing to score runs.
In only his 4th ball of the match, Virat Kohli landed a thick top edge towards the first slip following a super trap set up by Ireland's Mark Adair. The former India captain made a pre-meditated attempt to go down the track and smash the ball over the fence but he eventually ended up getting caught for just 1.
Virat Kohli will be spared for his 13-minute stay at the crease, since it was his first game at the venue and also because there weren't many runs to chase. He is expected to fight back in India's second Group game against Pakistan on the 9th of June.
But before he gears up for the Pakistan clash, former Indian batter Subramaniam Badrinath took an apparent dig at Virat Kohli.
Badrinath, who has won multiple IPL titles with CSK, took to X (formerly Twitter) and bashed the players who performed very well in IPL 2024. The former CSK man wrote that the Indian Premier League made an ordinary batter look extraordinary while the ordinary bowler in IPL is looking very good in the T20 WC.
Badrinath's thought has provoked fans to debate whether he is trying to say that Virat Kohli was outstanding due to the flat surface in India.
"IPL made an ordinary batsman look extraordinary, T20 World Cup is making ordinary bowler look very good .. perennial search of middle ground in T20’s continues." - Subramaniam Badrinath wrote on X.

India start their T20 WC campaign with 2 points

Following Virat Kohli's departure for just a run in response to the target of 97, the Indian team claimed 2 points with an 8-wicket victory. Rohit Sharma scored a 37-ball 52 while Rishabh Pant scored the winning runs with a six and remained not out at 36 off 26.
