On Tuesday, October 7, Cricket Ireland (CI) announced the Test and T20I squads of the Ireland National Cricket Team for the upcoming Bangladesh tour.
The Ireland tour of Bangladesh consists of a two-match Test series and a three-match T20I series that will be played across Sylhet, Dhaka, and Chattogram.
Andrew Balbirnie and Paul Stirling to lead Ireland
The upcoming matches between Ireland and the Bangla Tigers will be played in November-December, and the last time the Irish team travelled to Bangladesh was in 2023.
Sylhet will host the first Test from November 11, and Dhaka will host the second match from November 19. Overall, the Irishmen have played 10 Test matches, winning three of them.
Meanwhile, the T20I matches between the teams will be played on November 27, 29, and December 2 in Chattogram and Dhaka.
Andrew Balbirnie will be leading a strong Test side that consists of four newcomers in Cade Carmichael, Liam McCarthy, Jordan Neill, and Stephen Doheny. Also, uncapped player Gavin Hoey has been named in the squad.
Cade Carmichael has recovered from an injury and is back in the team, while Lorcan Tucker is also there in the Test line-up and will look to replicate his success from 2023 in Bangladesh.
Talking about the T20I squad, Paul Stirling will lead the team in preparations for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. Tim Tector has also returned to the team, while the rest of the squad is along the expected lines.
It is fantastic to have Test cricket on the horizon again – Andrew White
In an official statement, Ireland selector Andrew White expressed his excitement over the Irish team playing the upcoming Test matches and elaborated:
“It is fantastic to have Test cricket on the horizon again – and with that, we are excited to see Cade Carmichael come into the Test squad following his ODI debut against the West Indies earlier this year. Not only has he had a great season, but he has also demonstrated the qualities required to be an international cricketer in this format.
"Cade compiled an excellent century against Afghanistan A in a four-day match in the UAE earlier this year, and anyone watching his two ODI appearances against West Indies will have noticed his composure and his technical ability against quick bowling.
“Stephen Doheny is another player who has had a good domestic season and demonstrated a number of technical changes that we hope will enable him to be successful going forward."
Andrew White also emphasized managing the workload of their players as they head to Bangladesh, where the conditions are expected to be humid. He said:
“It is likely that we will need all of our seamers across the back-to-back Tests. Given the recent number of injuries we have been managing, and the volume of cricket in the coming months, we will need to proactively manage the group in what will undoubtedly be hot and humid conditions. This is only the second time we have played consecutive Tests as part of a tour – it’s a challenge I know the squad will relish as they adapt to Asian conditions.
“In terms of the T20 squad, the likelihood is that spin will play a more prominent role – so Gareth Delany, Matthew Humphreys and Ben White are expected to provide options in this area. And with Mark Adair and Josh Little returning to the squad, Graham Hume makes way on this occasion. On the batting front, the 15-player squad allows us to bring in Tim Tector while retaining Ben Calitz to give us middle-order depth.”
