New Zealand captain Kane Williamson talks about his “deeper than a game of cricket” bond with India captain Virat Kohli who he defeated recently in the ICC World Test Championship final at The Ageas Bowl to take the ICC Test mace and the number Test team ranking home.

Kane Williamson now has a superior record over his Indian counterpart in ICC events: the Kiwi skipper has got the better of Virat Kohli in the 2019 World Cup semi-final and now the ICC WTC final whereas he has lost to Kohli once, in the 2008 under-19 World Cup semi-final.

We always know that there’s a bigger picture to it all: Kane Williamson

Kane Williamson had a “really nice moment” with Virat Kohli – both the captains were seen sharing a profound hug following the WTC final result.

The Kiwis defeated the Asian giants by 8 wickets in Southampton to become the first ICC World Test Champions. Kane Williamson himself was there in the middle to see off the chase successfully without any more hiccups. He further speaks about the camaraderie they have shared over the years.

“At the end of it, after a long tough match like that, there’s an appreciation by both teams. Someone gets the trophy, and a team perhaps doesn’t get the fortune to have that. But we always know that there’s a bigger picture to it all. It was a really nice moment and our friendship and relationship are deeper than a game of cricket. And we both know that,” Kane Williamson told Cricbuzz.

India now moves on to the 5-Test series against England starting 4th August in Trent Bridge. This series will mark the beginning of the second WTC cycle. The Asian giants will then host World Test champions New Zealand for a 2-Test series. India will also play host to Sri Lanka and Australia and have tours lined up to South Africa and Bangladesh in the second WTC.

In the second cycle, Kane Williamson will lead his side to India, England, and Pakistan while they will host Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and South Africa.
