Indore-based coach Dinesh Sharma said that Indian all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer has the capability of leadership. Venkatesh was the revelation of IPL 2021 as he turned the fortunes of the KKR with his power-hitting spree against the best bowlers in the business.

Not only was he retained by the franchise with the likes of Sunil Narine and Andre Russell for IPL 2022, but also forced his case to break into the international stage.

Venkatesh made his T20I debut against New Zealand in Jaipur and had clearly expressed his willingness to bat in any position.

Venkatesh Iyer is a very intelligent guy with a great cricketing sense: Dinesh Sharma

The Madhya Pradesh player scored 379 runs from six innings in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2021-22 and slammed centuries, while batting in the middle-order, against Chandigarh and Kerala.

Talking about the player’s leadership role, Dinesh Sharma, who has been a long-time coach of Venkatesh Iyer, feels that it is too early to examine the all-rounder’s leadership qualities.

It would be too early to talk about it. He is a very intelligent guy with a great cricketing sense. It all depends on his future and what type of situation may come. But there is no doubt that he can handle it and is capable of doing well for any team as a leader,” Dinesh told Cricket Addictor.

We had a trainer for Venkatesh Iyer for his thighs and back: Dinesh Sharma

Dinesh also said that Venkatesh goes through strenuous training to keep himself fit by taking regular massages and work especially on his thighs and back.

“We had a trainer for him for his thighs and back as he also bowls medium pace and so he would work with him on it. And since he joined the Indian team, he was given GPRS where players are given a different schedule,” Dinesh said.

“There is one masseur of the MPCA team and he would look after him as players spend long hours on the field, so they need a massage for body relaxation,” he added.

Venkatesh made his T20I debut against New Zealand in Jaipur and is likely to make his ODI debut against South Africa in the upcoming three matches.
