Meanwhile, former cricketer Gambhir speaking to ANI said that Rohit was keen to go to South Africa after his amazing performance on the England tour. Gautam Gambhir added that Rohit was recently appointed as Test vice-captain of the team so it’s a massive blow. He said:

It’s a big blow for India and the way he batted in England, he would have like to go, South Africa, as he wouldn’t want to miss a Test while being in good form. He was just appointed as a vice-captain so it’s a massive blow.”

Notably, Rohit was appointed as the T20I Captain of India after Virat Kohli decided to step down from his role following the T20 World Cup 2021. The BCCI selectors didn’t want to have two white-ball captains in the team so they gave the ODI and T20I captaincy to Rohit. Also, the 34-year-old was appointed as new Test vice-captain after Ajinkya Rahane’s extremely poor performance with the bat for an extended period of time.
