Former Indian batting coach Sanjay Bangar said that Ravindra Jadeja and Shardul Thakur will have to contend with each other for the all-rounder’s spot in the Indian team.
Jadeja suffered a right forearm injury during the first Test match against New Zealand in Kanpur, he was subsequently ruled out of the South Africa tour and also missed the limited-overs series against West Indies at home.

The senior Indian all-rounder was named in both the Test and T20I squad for the upcoming bilateral series against Sri Lanka after he regained complete fitness.
Meanwhile, Shardul, who picked a couple of wickets in the final T20I match against West Indies, has been rested for the entire Sri Lanka series.

Bangar lauded the efforts of both Jadeja and Thakur for their performance with the Indian team in the last one year, he stressed on Saurashtra player’s batting refinement over the years.
“The more I think of it, the more it seems that it’s going to be a toss-up between Shardul Thakur and Ravindra Jadeja. That could be one of the reasons why Shardul Thakur has been rested when Jadeja has regained full fitness,” Bangar told Star Sports.
“Those two players have been doing the all-rounder’s role commendably for India over the last year or so, both with bat and ball. Ravindra Jadeja’s batting has been on the rise for the last couple of years and him being a left-hander can add that right-left sort of combination in the lower order as well, which the team has been looking for.
“I would say Jadeja is a straight swap for the position vacated by Shardul Thakur,” he added.
India starts their bilateral series against Sri Lanka on February 24 with the three-match T20I series followed by a couple of Test matches, the first T20I is scheduled to commence on February 24 in Lucknow.
