After India hammered South Africa, chasing a 271-run target with ease to seal the home series 2-1, head coach Gautam Gambhir almost got back his groove at taking sly digs at people who dare to criticise his coaching skills. This time, the Delhi Capitals owner was on Gambhir's radar after he had suggested a split coaching system following India's Test series loss to the Proteas.

On Saturday, Yashasvi Jaiswal scored his maiden century, while the legendary Indian batters Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma scored respective fifties and helped India chase a total of 271 with ease. This came after a tough loss in the Raipur game, where Indian bowlers failed to defend a 358-run total.

Having won the ODI series after a tragic loss in the Test series, the head coach Gautam Gambhir appeared relieved in the press conference, and with a vicious smile on his face, he slowly and gently got back at his critics who slandered his reputation following the Test tragedy.

Gautam Gambhir gets back at Delhi Capitals owner for suggesting split coaching for India across formats

Addressing the press after India's win in Visakhapatnam, Gautam Gambhir, the head coach, spoke about the nature of criticism he received despite admitting that results in red-ball cricket have not gone their way.

The Indian coach lashed out at the IPL team owner for having crossed a line and having suggested a split coaching role in the Indian team across formats. He was short of naming the Delhi Capitals owner, Parth Jindal, directly.

“There were a few things said by people, who didn’t have any connection to cricket. One IPL owner also wrote about split coaching. This is very surprising. It’s important for people to stay in their domain. We don’t go into their domain. So, they have no right to interfere in what we do," said Gambhir about the comments made by the DC owner.

Indian head coach slams media for neglecting Shubman Gill's absence from SA Tests

While Gautam Gambhir has been unavoidably successful in the white-ball formats, he has struggled in Test cricket, as India has not produced many results in their favour. The coach has not been spared either, as he has received immense criticism for his lack of red-ball success.

Gautam Gambhir said that India had suffered a massive blow in the form of their injured skipper. Shubman Gill was ruled out midway through the series, as he failed to bat across any innings of the two tests, and Gambhir cited this as the prior reason for India's tragic losses. He seemed frustrated that no media reports mentioned or highlighted this.

“A lot has been said, no doubt. Yes, results haven’t gone our way. But, the most shocking part about all this is not one media house, not one journalist mentioned that the first Test we played, we were without our captain, who didn’t bat in both innings," said Gautam Gambhir.

He also added that he did not give out excuses on pitch conditions but rather took the blame for the losses. Also, the fact that during any transition phase, losing the team's most in-form batter is something very difficult to cope with, and that is just what happened with India after Gill's injury.

"The difference was 30 runs. I don’t come and give excuses in the press conference; that doesn’t mean that you all won’t bring out the facts to the world."

When you are facing a quality opposition, and you lose your captain midway through a Test, it becomes difficult. The most surprising part was no one discussed this. All that was discussed was about the pitch, I don’t know what else people said,” Gautam Gambhir added.

India will next take on South Africa in T20Is

After the heroic win in the ODIs, India has levelled the overall tour with the South Africans. They will now square off in the T20I series, which starts on the 9th of December, which is Tuesday.

Veterans like Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah return to the Indian team, while Shubman Gill also returns after a short gap due to injury. Captain Suryakumar Yadav brings along some form from the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, as India look to continue their unbeaten series run in T20s.
