"It's with great sadness..." - Jos Buttler pens emotional message after quitting captaincy

Outing England skipper Jos Buttler penned down an emotional message after stepping down from the role. He said that leading his country was the biggest honor for him, but with results not going their way, it was the right time for him to make the decision.

England National Cricket Team player Jos Buttler called time on his captaincy career after the team's last game in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The Three Lions took on South Africa National Cricket Team at the National Stadium in Karachi on Saturday (1st March).

Buttler's decision came after the England National Cricket Team had a horrendous campaign in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Under his leadership, the Three Lions failed to win a single game and faced a group-stage exit, losing to Australia, Afghanistan, and South Africa.

Buttler failed terribly as a batter and captain as England looked like the weakest team in group b. Not only in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, but since the last few years, his leadership hasn't been up to the mark, and after winning the T20 World Cup 2022, they faced a massive downfall.

England, under Buttler, looked extremely poor in the ICC World Cup 2023 as they faced group stage exit there as well. After that, in the T20 World Cup 2024, they qualified for the semi-final but faced a thrashing loss to India in the knockout clash. Before facing the debacle in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

Jos Buttler, who made his decision to step down public ahead of the South Africa clash, said that he will always be proud to have led his country. But mentioned that it was the right time for him to step away. Taking to this Instagram account, he said:

"It’s with great sadness that I have decided to step down as England white-ball captain. Leading your country is an immense honour and something I have and always will be very proud to have done. The results are clear and obvious and it is the right time for me and the team to make this decision."

Buttler also expressed his gratitude towards players, staff, and England fans for supporting him throughout his captaincy career. He also posted a special message for his family. He expressed:

"I would just like to take this opportunity to thank all the players, staff and England fans who have supported me throughout my time as captain, but most importantly, I would like to thank my wife Louise and my family. You have been unwavering pillars of support throughout the highs and lows of the job and I cannot thank you enough. Onto the next chapter."
