Suryakumar Yadav slammed the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) for not handing over the trophy and winners’ medals to the India National Cricket Team after they defeated Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2025 final on Sunday (September 28) at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in Dubai.
While Indian cricket fans celebrated Tilak Varma’s unbeaten 69-run knock and Rinku Singh’s winning hit, the post-match trophy ceremony turned into chaos. The Suryakumar Yadav-led Indian cricket team refused to accept the Asia Cup 2025 trophy and medals from ACC president and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi, who is also Pakistan’s Interior Minister.
Suryakumar Yadav refuses the Asia Cup trophy from Mohsin Naqvi
India’s stance was clear, having already skipped handshakes and photo sessions with Pakistan in all three matches in the tournament. Indian officials requested that Emirates Cricket Board vice-chairman Khalid Al Zarooni present the trophy instead of Naqvi, but ACC denied the request.
When Mohsin Naqvi approached the podium, the stadium erupted with chants of “Bharat Mata Ki Jai,” and even Haris Rauf and Shaheen Afridi faced boos.
Meanwhile, Naqvi refused to hand the runners-up medals to the Pakistan team, which received them later from the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Aminul Islam, while the runners-up check was thrown aside by the captain, Salman Ali Agha.
India celebrates victory without a trophy or medals
Simon Doull later announced on live TV that India would not be collecting their awards, officially ending the presentation. The champions’ placard was even brought onto the field twice and then taken away as the Indian team patiently waited for the Asia Cup trophy.
Despite the absence of official trophies or medals, the Indian players celebrated their victory in style. Hardik Pandya took a selfie on the podium, while Suryakumar Yadav mimicked former Indian captain Rohit Sharma’s iconic slow-walk celebration from the 2024 T20 World Cup with fireworks lighting up the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
Suryakumar Yadav shocked as India denied “Hard-Earned" Asia Cup 2025 trophy
Meanwhile, Suryakumar Yadav expressed his shock at the Asia Cup 2025 final ceremony. The Indian captain mentioned that this victory was hard-fought and that they deserved the trophy. Slamming Mohsin Naqvi, Suryakumar said that he had never seen a champion team being denied the trophy.
Suryakumar Yadav said at the post-match press conference: “This is one thing which I have never seen since I have started playing cricket, since I have started following cricket that a champion team is denied to get a trophy. That too was a hard-earned one; it’s not like we got it easily.
It was a hard-earned tournament. We were here since the 4th and played two back-to-back good games. I feel we deserved it. I can’t say anything more; I think I have summed it up really well. I can’t say anything more about it.”
Suryakumar calls the Indian team and support staff the real medals
Despite not receiving the trophy, Suryakumar has emphasized that the real reward was the effort, teamwork, and moments shared with his teammates and support staff. He described the players and coaching team as the true champions, and moments with them he will cherish forever.
Suryakumar signed off by saying, “If you tell me about the trophies, my trophies are sitting in the dressing room—all 14 guys, all the support staff—those are the real trophies who I have been a big fan of throughout this journey of the Asia Cup. Those are the real trophies, the real moments, which I am taking back as lovely memories and which will stay forever.”
