England national selector Marcus North has stated that Jack Leach is unlikely to earn a Test recall for the upcoming tour of Bangladesh. England are focusing on developing younger spin options through their central and development contract programmes for the 2026-27 cycle.

Jack Leach last played for England during the Test tour of Pakistan in late 2024 and has not featured in a squad since. However, he has continued to impress for Somerset, taking 88 wickets at an average of 21.73 in Division One of the County Championship over the last two seasons.

We've Seen Him at International Level – Marcus North on Jack Leach

Speaking on the Wisden Cricket Weekly podcast, Marcus North indicated that England's recent contract decisions reflect a shift in their spin-bowling plans. Shoaib Bashir and Rehan Ahmed received central contracts for the 2026-27 cycle, while Mason Crane, James Coles and Liam Patterson-White secured development deals.

"We've seen him at international level with England. He continues to do exceptionally well at Somerset," North said when asked about Jack Leach's prospects. "But as it stands now, those selections around the development contracts and the central contract list show that we're focusing on a slightly different direction."

Jack Leach has taken 142 wickets in 39 Tests at an average of 34.07 and a strike rate of 66.21, including five five-wicket hauls. England could reconsider his position ahead of their five-match Test tour of India in early 2028.

No Jack Leach! ECB Expands Spin Programme Ahead of Bangladesh Tour

England are scheduled to play a two-match Test series in Bangladesh in February. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is strengthening its spin-bowling programme to prepare for the demands of the subcontinent.

Richard Dawson was recently appointed England's national spin-bowling lead while also taking up a role as one of Stephen Fleming's new assistant coaches. Marcus North said that England must select a versatile bowling attack capable of adapting to different conditions in Bangladesh.

"They [Bangladesh] are a good cricket team now, a good Test team," North said. "It's not just going over there and facing good spinners; they've got some very good quicks, so we know that's going to be a good test. But we need to have a squad that can give us all options in those conditions as well."

"As much as there's been a project with fast bowling, you'll see that there's now a number of spin bowlers that have come into our system… that we can invest in," he added. "Where we want to get is to have the depth that we can have some really good, robust discussions around the type of skillset that we're looking for and the balance of the side."

England Face Selection Dilemmas Ahead of South Africa Tests

England did not select a specialist spinner, including Jack Leach, for their first series since Ben Stokes' international retirement. They relied on the off-breaks of Dan Lawrence and Joe Root during their 3-0 series sweep over Pakistan, while Bashir carried the drinks.

England are expected to adopt a similar team balance for their Test series in South Africa in December. However, the selectors face a difficult decision over the batting order, depending on Jacob Bethell's recovery from a knee injury.

His return could leave Emilio Gay, Jordan Cox, Dan Lawrence or Bethell himself out of the side. Marcus North said the selectors had not made a final decision on the batting combination but welcomed the competition for places.

"It's going to be a tough call and tough decision, and that's exactly the place we want to be in," North said.
