The IPL mini-auction for the upcoming 19th edition of the IPL began in Abu Dhabi on December 16. The 25-year-old youngster from England, Jamie Smith, was expected to make his debut in the IPL 2026, but he went unsold at the auction.
The franchises entered the auction with a huge purse but did not acquire the services of the Englishman. Jamie Smith plays across all three formats of the game for England and is among the very few all-format players currently.
Jamie Smith not to make his IPL debut in 2026
Jamie Smith, the English wicket-keeper, was expected to be one of the most highly demanded players in the mini-auction.
Playing for England, he has proven why he can be an asset in limited-overs cricket, which needs quick scoring of runs.
Several franchises in the mini-auction, like the Kolkata Knight Riders, were in search of a wicket-keeper who could take the gloves on.
Jamie Smith's T20 numbers
In his short career, Smith has played in 97 T20 games and has amassed 1687 runs across those matches. Averaging around 25, Jamie Smith has extended his strike rate to around 145.
Alongside being a wicket-keeper, Smith is also a natural clean striker of the ball, as he can often launch deliveries and deposit them out of the park. Especially with his height favouring long levers, Smith can be effective both during the power play and also lower down the order.
Other than the Hundred and the Vitality Blast, Jamie Smith has played only in the ILT20.
