India's Day 1 at Lord's might not have been the best of outings, but the track definitely offered something to the bowlers, unlike the flat pitches of Headingley and Edgbaston.

India bowling first would have desired more wickets up front, especially with their best fast bowler returning to the playing 11 after a brief gap, citing workload management. Though Jasprit Bumrah bowled a stunning starting spell, throwing a challenge to the English batter, he went wicketless.

However, this was the first time in the series that the scoring rate for England looked much in control, as they were forced to sideline the Bazball type of play and go back to the orthodox style of Test cricket.

Amid all this, there has been immense criticism surrounding even the great Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who is flawless for India under any circumstances. People have openly criticized his absence from crucial games in the name of workload management, which came after his absence in the Edgbaston test.

Wasim Jaffer backs Jasprit Bumrah for workload management

Former Indian Test opener Wasim Jaffer has come in Bumrah's support on the issue of his workload management. In a recent exclusive conversation with RevSportz, he was asked his opinion on Jasprit Bumrah's workload and the criticism he received despite his brilliance for India.

Jaffer said that Bumrah knows his body well; he has been around for several years, almost more than a decade. As a fan or as an outsider, everyone would love to see Bumrah in action, but he is under the constant watch of the medical team and physios and should be doing as instructed.

"I think he knows his body very well. He has played for 10 or more years. I think the physios, the medical staff, know what’s going on with his body."

"As a fan, as an outsider, we want him to play every game. There is no doubt about it. But we need to understand that if he gets injured now, there is a chance that he might not play, and he might be away for long. We don’t want that to happen."

"I’m sure he also wants to be part of every Test match. But because of his style, because of his bowling action, because of the workload, he can’t do that," said Jaffer in the interview.

Jaffer hints at why Shubman Gill was handed Test captaincy over Bumrah

Jaffer pointed out why Jasprit Bumrah was not given the role of India's Test captain, despite him being Rohit's deputy and beginning the BGT 2024/25 with a win in the first test.

The reasons are quite similar to what kept Hardik Pandya out of the race for India's T20I captaincy, that is, injury proneness.

"I feel, whatever the medical staff is trying to suggest, or Bumrah himself has said, that he probably won’t play all the five Test matches, and that’s the reason he hasn’t taken the captaincy. So, we’ve got to respect that."

Any further injury might once again find him ruled out for a long time, as Jasprit Bumrah made his return in the IPL 2025 after being ruled out due to injury since the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. This kept him out of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, a major tournament from India's point of view.

"we don’t want Bumrah to get injured. We can take Bumrah not playing one or two matches, but we can’t take that Bumrah is going to be out for three, four, five, six months," added the former cricketer.

Jasprit Bumrah shuts critics with Lord's wonder

Jasprit Bumrah might have missed the Edgbaston Test and faced immense criticism for missing such a vital test when India was already behind by a loss in the first Test.

But the world's no. 1 test bowler, ranked by ICC, has kept his name on another occasion, and this time it's at the Lord's. Jasprit Bumrah features in the Lord's Honours Board with a 5-fer in the first inning of the third Test, after making a return to the Indian playing 11.
