Team India pacer Jasprit Bumrah’s absence from the fifth Test against England at The Oval was reportedly due to a knee injury, not workload management. According to a Mumbai Mirror report, the bowler was left out as a precautionary measure after signs of discomfort surfaced, to avoid aggravating the issue.
Before the England series began, head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Shubman Gill stated that Bumrah would feature in only three of the five matches. The decision was made to manage his workload and reduce the risk of a recurrence of the injury he sustained during the Australia tour earlier this year.
Jasprit Bumrah's Release from Fifth Test Sparks Speculation
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had initially announced that Bumrah was released from the squad for the fifth Test against England, without providing any explanation or mentioning an injury. His absence from the playing XI didn’t raise concerns.
However, the BCCI provided an update during the match, which sparked speculation. Critics questioned why a key player was sent home mid-Test after being rested, especially when his experience could have been valuable in the dressing room.
"Mr Jasprit Bumrah has been released from India’s squad for the fifth Test of the series against England. The fifth and final Test of the series is underway at Kennington Oval, London," the BCCI release said.
Jasprit Bumrah Set to Begin Rehab at BCCI’s Centre of Excellence After Knee Injury
According to the Mumbai Mirror report, Jasprit Bumrah was withdrawn from the fifth Test due to a knee injury, not for workload management. A BCCI official, speaking anonymously, confirmed that the pacer’s injury is not serious and won’t require surgery.
The medical team is awaiting scan results, and Bumrah is now set to begin his rehabilitation at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru.
“Unfortunately, Bumrah is suffering from a knee injury. The good thing is that it’s not a major one and won’t require surgery. The BCCI medical team is currently awaiting his scan reports," the report cited an anonymous BCCI official as saying.
Jasprit Bumrah, India’s Second-Highest Wicket-Taker of the Series
Jasprit Bumrah featured in three of the five Tests in the ongoing series against England and made a significant impact despite missing the final match. The pacer picked up 14 wickets at an average of 26.00, including two five-wicket hauls - one each at Leeds and Lord’s.
In his final outing of the series at Old Trafford, Bumrah bowled a marathon 33 overs on a flat pitch and ended with figures of 2/112. It is worth mentioning that this was one of the rare occasions where he conceded over 100 runs in a Test innings.
He missed the second Test, where India secured a dominant win, and was sidelined from the fifth due to a knee injury. Notably, his participation in the upcoming Asia Cup and the Test series against the West Indies remains uncertain, with further medical updates awaited.
